This medication is used to treat symptoms of chronic constipation in adult patients who have failed to achieve symptom relief with laxative treatment.

How to take

Adult dose

Administered orally, it can be taken at any time of the day regardless of meals. Adults should take 2 mg once daily. Elderly patients aged 65 and older should start with a dosage of 1 mg once daily, which may be increased to 2 mg once daily if necessary. For patients with severe renal impairment, a dose of 1 mg once daily is recommended, while those with mild to moderate renal impairment do not require dosage adjustments. For patients with severe liver impairment, a dose of 1 mg once daily is recommended.

Precautions

This medication should not be used in certain patients. Individuals with allergies to the active ingredient or excipients should not take this medication. Patients with severely impaired kidney function requiring dialysis should also avoid taking this medication. Patients with severe inflammation or structural problems in the intestines, such as bowel perforation, bowel obstruction, Crohn's disease, or ulcerative colitis, should not use this medication. Additionally, since this medication contains lactose, individuals with lactose intolerance or related genetic disorders should not take it. Patients with severely reduced kidney function should use this medication with caution and may require a dose reduction. Patients with serious comorbidities such as severe liver disease, cardiovascular disease, pulmonary disease, neurological disorders, malignancies, AIDS, or endocrine disorders should also be careful when using this medication. Patients with a history of arrhythmias or ischemic heart disease should take it with caution. For patients with significantly impaired liver function, doses should be reduced, and especially cautious should be exercised when this medication is used in conjunction with other medications that may affect heart rhythms. Taking this medication can commonly result in gastrointestinal symptoms such as headaches, abdominal pain, nausea, and diarrhea. These symptoms usually occur in the early stages of treatment and tend to resolve over time. Symptoms like palpitations, dizziness, and fatigue have also been reported, and if symptoms are severe, consultation with a physician is advised. In cases of severe diarrhea, the effectiveness of oral contraceptives may be diminished, therefore additional contraceptive methods are recommended. This medication has a low potential for drug interactions; however, caution is advised when taken with certain antifungal medications or drugs affecting heart rhythm. Moreover, drugs like atropine may reduce the effectiveness of this medication. Use of this medication is not recommended during pregnancy, and women of childbearing potential should implement effective contraception during treatment. Breastfeeding women are also advised against using this medication. It is generally best to avoid using this medication in children and adolescents under 18 years of age. Overdose may result in symptoms such as headache, nausea, and diarrhea, and appropriate treatment based on symptoms may be necessary. Severe diarrhea or vomiting can lead to significant fluid loss, and electrolyte replenishment may be required. This medication may cause dizziness and fatigue, especially at the beginning of treatment, hence caution is advised while driving or operating machinery. Finally, this medication should be stored out of reach of children and kept in its original container to avoid moisture.
