Treatment of chronic constipation symptoms
This medication is used for the treatment of chronic constipation symptoms in adults who have failed to relieve symptoms with laxative therapy. This drug may be helpful when conventional laxatives are ineffective. It improves chronic difficulty in bowel movements, reducing discomfort in daily life. With consistent use, it can help normalize bowel habits, thereby alleviating symptoms such as abdominal pain and bloating caused by chronic constipation. Therefore, it is used for effective treatment of chronic constipation.
This medication is taken orally and can be administered at any time of the day regardless of meals. Adults should take 2 mg once daily. For elderly patients aged 65 and older, the initial dose is 1 mg once daily, which may be increased to 2 mg once daily if necessary. In patients with severe renal impairment, 1 mg should be administered once daily, while those with mild to moderate renal impairment do not require dose adjustment. In patients with severe liver impairment, similar dosage adjustments are needed.
This medication should not be used in patients allergic to the active ingredient or excipients. It is also contraindicated in patients with severely impaired kidney function or those requiring dialysis. This medication should not be administered to patients with severe inflammation or obstruction of the intestines. Furthermore, patients with genetic issues regarding lactose digestion should not take this medication. Patients with slightly impaired kidney function should use it with caution at a reduced dose. The safety of this medication has not been sufficiently studied in patients with other serious conditions such as liver, heart, lung, or nervous system diseases, so caution is advised. Particularly, patients with a history of arrhythmia or ischemic heart disease should be careful. Those with severely impaired liver function should use a reduced dose. Caution is also needed when taking this medication with other drugs that may affect heart rhythm. Gastrointestinal symptoms such as headache, nausea, diarrhea, and abdominal pain may commonly occur when taking this medication, typically appearing in the early stages of treatment and resolving within a few days. Occasionally, symptoms such as dizziness, palpitations, and fatigue have also been reported. If new episodes of palpitations arise, consultation with a physician is necessary. In cases of severe diarrhea, the effectiveness of oral contraceptives may be reduced, so it is advisable to use additional contraceptive methods. This medication has a low potential for interactions with other drugs, but caution should be exercised when taken with certain antifungal agents or heart-related medications. Additionally, medications like atropine may reduce the effectiveness of this drug. There are no specific effects when taken with food. The use of this medication during pregnancy is not recommended, and women of childbearing age should use effective contraception while taking it. Breastfeeding women are also advised against taking this medication. It is advisable not to use this medication in children or adolescents under 18 years of age. In case of overdose, symptoms such as headache, nausea, and diarrhea may occur, and appropriate treatment is required depending on the symptoms. This medication may cause dizziness and fatigue at the start of treatment, so caution is advised when driving or operating machinery. This medication should be stored out of reach of children and kept in its original container to avoid moisture.
