This medication is used for the treatment and prevention of herpes simplex virus infections of the skin and mucous membranes, including primary and recurrent genital herpes. It is also effective in treating herpes zoster virus infections, particularly alleviating pain during the acute phase. However, the efficacy for postherpetic neuralgia has not been clearly established. Additionally, it is utilized for the treatment of chickenpox in children over 2 years of age. Its effectiveness in treating various viral infections significantly contributes to the improvement of patient symptoms.

How it is given

Adult administration

Precautions

This medication should not be used by patients who are allergic to this drug or its ingredients. Patients with impaired kidney function may be more prone to experiencing central nervous system side effects when using this drug, therefore caution is required. Patients with impaired liver function should be administered this drug cautiously due to the risk of further liver impairment. Special care should be taken when using this medication in children and infants, as well as in the elderly who may also have a higher incidence of side effects. While taking this medication, there is a rare possibility of severe allergic reactions such as anaphylactic shock occurring, and if symptoms such as low blood pressure, difficulty breathing, or chest tightness appear, the medication should be stopped immediately and medical personnel notified. Hypersensitivity reactions such as photosensitivity, skin rashes, fever, and urticaria may occur; if these symptoms develop, discontinue the medication and consult a doctor. Severe skin-related side effects such as hair loss, severe skin inflammation, and mucosal damage may occur, so skin condition should be monitored closely. Neuropsychiatric side effects such as altered consciousness, loss of spatial orientation, decreased concentration, confusion, hallucinations, seizures, drowsiness, etc. may occur, especially in patients with impaired kidney function or the elderly. Due to renal dysfunction, symptoms such as renal failure, hematuria, or proteinuria may develop, so renal status should be regularly monitored. Hematological side effects such as leukopenia, bleeding, and anemia may occur, so if abnormal symptoms arise, consult medical personnel immediately. Liver function abnormalities such as hepatitis, jaundice, and elevated liver enzyme levels may occur, so liver health should be periodically checked. Gastrointestinal side effects such as gastritis, constipation, diarrhea, vomiting, and abdominal pain may occur, so if gastrointestinal symptoms are severe, discontinue the medication and consult. Systemically, symptoms such as fever, edema, headache, and malaise may appear; thus, changes in body condition should be closely observed. Myalgia or arthralgia may develop, so if discomfort persists, notify medical personnel. Cardiovascular side effects such as arrhythmia, blood pressure changes, and chest pain may occur, so pay attention to heart-related symptoms. There may be difficulties in urine excretion due to urinary tract issues, so if there are any abnormalities in urination, notify personnel immediately. This medication is most effective when administered as soon as possible, and if symptoms do not improve or worsen, other treatment options should be considered. To prevent dehydration during administration, adequate fluid intake is very important. For patients with weakened immune systems, intravenous treatment may be necessary. When taking this medication, caution is advised when driving or operating hazardous machinery, as there may be occurrences of altered consciousness. Interactions with other medications may occur, especially increasing the risk of side effects when used concomitantly with medications affecting kidney function or specific drugs; always consult your doctor or pharmacist. Women who are pregnant or may become pregnant should only use this drug if absolutely necessary, as it may harm the fetus. The ingredients of this drug can pass into breast milk, so it is recommended to discontinue breastfeeding during treatment. Extreme caution should be taken when using this medication in infants and children, especially in newborns or low-weight children due to the risk, so always follow the doctor's judgment. The elderly may experience higher drug concentrations due to decreased kidney function, therefore doses and administration intervals should be adjusted carefully.
