Relief of peripheral neuropathic pain
This medication is used to relieve pain caused by peripheral neuropathy in adults. Peripheral neuropathic pain occurs due to nerve damage and can cause significant discomfort in daily life. This medication effectively controls such neural pain, thereby improving pain symptoms. Therefore, it helps alleviate neuropathic pain symptoms in adult patients.
This medication is administered once daily after dinner. It should be swallowed whole and must not be divided, crushed, or chewed. The starting dose may be 150 mg once daily. Based on individual patient response and tolerance, the dose may be increased to a maximum of 600 mg once daily at weekly intervals. Upon discontinuation, it must be tapered gradually over a period of at least one week.
This medication may increase the risk of suicidal thoughts or behaviors, so if any mood changes or abnormal behavior occur during treatment, it is essential to inform a healthcare professional immediately. Patients with hypersensitivity to this medication should not take it. Diabetic patients may need to adjust the dose of blood sugar control medications due to weight gain after taking this medication. If symptoms of angioedema (swelling of the face, around the mouth, and upper respiratory tract) occur, administration should be discontinued immediately. Elderly patients should exercise caution as symptoms such as dizziness, drowsiness, loss of consciousness, and confusion may occur, and they should avoid hazardous activities until they are accustomed to these effects. Temporary blurred vision or changes in eyesight may occur, which can improve once the medication is discontinued. Before administering this medication alone, caution is advised due to insufficient data regarding the discontinuation of other antiepileptic drugs. Abrupt discontinuation can lead to withdrawal symptoms such as insomnia, headache, nausea, anxiety, diarrhea, depression, and suicidal thoughts, so it should be gradually discontinued under a doctor's guidance. Patients with a history of drug abuse may be at higher risk of abusing this medication, so special attention is necessary. Patients with impaired kidney function may need dose adjustment. Patients with heart disease should be cautious when taking this medication, especially those with congestive heart failure should use it carefully. When used in combination with opioid analgesics, the risk of central nervous system depression increases, so caution is necessary. Patients with respiratory or neurological diseases, kidney impairment, or elderly patients may be at risk of severe respiratory depression and may require dose adjustments. In early pregnancy, there is a risk of congenital malformations in the fetus, so pregnant women should not take this medication, and women of childbearing age should use effective contraception. Women who are breastfeeding should consider stopping breastfeeding or discontinuing the medication, as it may be transmitted through breast milk and affect the infant. While taking this medication, dizziness and drowsiness may occur, so it is essential to avoid driving or operating dangerous machinery. In case of overdose, symptoms such as drowsiness, confusion, depression, and seizures may occur, requiring immediate medical assistance. It should be stored out of reach of children or the elderly and should not be transferred to other containers.
