Improvement of hypercholesterolemia and dyslipidemia
This medication lowers cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol, apo-B protein, and triglyceride levels while raising HDL-cholesterol levels in patients with primary hypercholesterolemia and mixed dyslipidemia. It helps to effectively improve blood lipid levels as a complement to dietary therapy. Therefore, it plays an important role in managing hyperlipidemia and also contributes to the prevention of cardiovascular diseases.
For adults, the usual initial dose of pitavastatin calcium is 1 to 2 mg once daily. If the effect on LDL-cholesterol reduction is insufficient, the dose may be increased to a maximum of 4 mg per day. Dose adjustments should be made appropriately with intervals of at least 4 weeks or more based on LDL-cholesterol level, treatment goals, and patient response. The therapeutic effect of this drug is maintained with continuous administration.
This drug should not be used in certain patients. It should not be administered to individuals with hypersensitivity to this drug, active liver disease, or persistent elevated liver enzyme levels of unknown origin, nor to patients with severe liver impairment or biliary obstruction. Additionally, it should not be used by patients taking cyclosporine, those with myopathy, pregnant or potentially pregnant women, nursing mothers, or children. Extreme caution should be exercised when administering this drug to individuals with renal impairment or liver dysfunction, those with excessive alcohol intake, patients taking fibrates or nicotinic acid, those with hypothyroidism, patients with a history of genetic muscle disease or myopathy, elderly patients, and patients with severe myasthenia. During treatment with this drug, abnormal symptoms such as muscle pain, weakness, abdominal pain, rash, and itching may occur, and serious muscle damage such as liver dysfunction, thrombocytopenia, or rhabdomyolysis may also occur. Therefore, it is important to regularly check blood tests and liver function tests to monitor for adverse reactions. This drug can interact with other medications, so caution should be exercised, especially when used in combination with cyclosporine, fibrates, nicotinic acid, or erythromycin, as the risk of renal function deterioration and muscle damage may be increased. In elderly patients, due to decreased physical function, the risk of adverse reactions may be higher, necessitating dosage adjustments and precautions. Pregnant or nursing women should not use this drug, and if they become pregnant while taking it, they should discontinue the medication immediately. The safety and efficacy of this medication in children have not been established, so its use is not recommended. Since this medication is used to treat hypercholesterolemia, thorough examinations should be conducted to confirm hyperlipidemia before administration, and non-pharmacological treatments such as dietary therapy and exercise should also be considered. During treatment, regular monitoring of blood lipid levels should be conducted to assess treatment efficacy and adverse reactions, and the drug should be discontinued immediately if abnormalities are detected. This medication should be kept out of reach of children and stored in its original container to prevent misuse or deterioration of quality.
