This medication is used for the treatment of gastric ulcers and duodenal ulcers, and is effective in alleviating the symptoms of erosive or ulcerative gastroesophageal reflux disease. It also helps in the long-term maintenance therapy of gastroesophageal reflux disease and is used in combination with antibiotics to treat infections caused by Helicobacter pylori. It is also utilized for excessive gastric acid secretion disorders such as Zollinger-Ellison syndrome. Overall, this medication is useful for the improvement and treatment of various gastrointestinal disease symptoms.
The usual dosage for adults is 10 mg of Rabeprazole Sodium taken orally once a day. Depending on symptoms, it may be taken as 20 mg orally once per day. Generally, 8 weeks for gastric ulcers and 6 weeks for duodenal ulcers. For erosive or ulcerative gastroesophageal reflux disease, 10 mg or 20 mg may be administered once daily for 4-8 weeks. If not resolved after 8 weeks of treatment, additional 8 weeks with 10 mg or 20 mg can be prescribed.
Safety for children has not been established.
This medication should not be used in patients with allergies or hypersensitivity history to specific components or benzimidazoles. Patients with hypersensitivity to penicillin antibiotics or macrolide antibiotics should exercise caution when using this medication. In particular, when combined with certain antibiotics during the eradication treatment of Helicobacter pylori, severe allergic reactions may occur. Additionally, patients taking certain heart-related medications or receiving drugs like Atazanavir or Rilpivirine should not use this medication together. It is safest for pregnant or breastfeeding women to avoid using this medication. Caution is necessary for patients with impaired liver function or elderly patients as they may experience more side effects from this medication. If allergic reactions such as rash, hives, or itching occur while taking this medication, use should be stopped immediately. Regular blood tests are necessary as abnormalities may occur in blood test results, and it is advisable to also conduct liver function tests. Various side effects including cardiovascular symptoms, gastrointestinal symptoms, and central nervous system symptoms may occur, so consult with medical staff if unusual symptoms arise. Long-term use may increase the risk of osteoporosis and fractures, so periodic check-ups and vigilance are necessary. Since this medication inhibits gastric acid secretion, the risk of bacterial infection in the stomach may increase, so inform your doctor if diarrhea persists. Drowsiness or dizziness may occur; thus, caution is needed while driving or operating machinery. This medication may interact with other drugs, so inform medical staff, especially when taken with antibiotics, antiviral drugs, or anticoagulants. Safety during pregnancy and breastfeeding has not been established, hence it is advisable to avoid use. This medication should not be chewed or crushed and must be swallowed whole, and keep it out of the reach of children. There is no specific antidote for overdose, so appropriate treatment should be administered based on symptoms. Regular check-ups and following medical staff's instructions is important if this medication is taken for a long time.
