Treatment of respiratory and skin infections, mycobacterial infections, and Helicobacter pylori infection associated with duodenal ulcers
This medication is used to treat infections caused by various bacteria. It is effective for lower respiratory infections such as bronchitis and pneumonia, as well as upper respiratory infections such as pharyngitis and sinusitis. It is also used to treat skin and skin structure infections, as well as infections caused by Mycobacterium avium and intracellularis. In particular, it helps in the eradication of Helicobacter pylori in patients with duodenal ulcers. This is a medication effective in improving various infectious diseases.
○ Adults: The usual dose is 250mg (potency) of clarithromycin twice daily. For severe infections, administer 500mg (potency) twice daily. The usual treatment duration is 7~14 days. In patients with renal failure and a creatinine clearance of 30mL/min or less, the dose should be reduced by half: 250mg (potency) once daily, or, for severe infections, 250mg (potency) twice daily. Do not administer for more than 14 days to these patients. ○ Mycobacterial infections: Administer 500mg (potency) of this medicine twice daily. In this case, it should be administered in combination with other antimycobacterial agents such as ethambutol, clofazimine, and rifampin. ○ Eradication of Helicobacter pylori in patients with duodenal ulcer: Administer 500mg (potency) of this medicine 3 times daily for 14 days in combination with omeprazole 40mg once daily, followed by omeprazole 40mg once daily for 14 consecutive days. That is, administer clarithromycin 500mg (potency) per dose 3 times daily for 14 days (days 1~14), and omeprazole 40mg once daily for 28 days (days 1~28).
○ Children aged 12 years and older: Same as adults ○ For children under 12 years, use clarithromycin dry syrup.
This medication should not be used by certain patients. First, individuals allergic to the additives in this medication should avoid taking it. Additionally, those who have had hypersensitivity reactions to similar antibiotics should not use it. Caution is needed for patients taking certain heart-related medications, as there is a risk of cardiac rhythm abnormalities when this medication is combined with them. Patients with a history of arrhythmia or QT interval prolongation should also avoid using this medication. Those with severely impaired liver function and severely reduced kidney function should also avoid taking this medication. Pregnant or nursing women should not take this medication, and caution is required for children or patients with central nervous system infections. When taking this medication, patients with weakened liver and kidney function, heart disease, the elderly, and those taking other antibiotics should be administered it cautiously. Patients with drug allergies or those sensitive to this medication's coloring agents should also be careful. During treatment, rare side effects such as shortness of breath, rash, hives, abdominal pain, diarrhea, liver dysfunction, kidney function decline, and central nervous system symptoms may occur, so if any unusual symptoms arise, immediate consultation with medical personnel is recommended. In particular, if severe allergic reactions or skin rashes occur, medication should be discontinued immediately, and treatment should be sought. This drug interacts with many other medications, and when taken with certain medications, drug concentrations may increase or decrease, so it is essential to inform medical personnel of any medications currently being taken. Caution is especially needed when taken with anticoagulants, heart medications, anticonvulsants, immunosuppressants, and statins. Pregnant or nursing women should not take this medication, and if it must be taken, breastfeeding should be discontinued. For children, safety and efficacy have not been sufficiently established for children under 12 years of age, so caution in use is needed. The elderly may require dose adjustments as kidney function decline may increase the body's concentration of the drug. In the event of overdose, symptoms such as vomiting, abdominal pain, and mental disturbances may occur, so it is crucial to adhere to the prescribed dosage and visit a hospital immediately in the case of overdose. This medication should only be taken for the necessary duration to prevent the development of drug-resistant bacteria, and even if symptoms improve, it should be completed as directed by medical personnel.
