Reduction of the risk of myocardial infarction and stroke and improvement of hyperlipidemia
This medication is used to reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease. It helps reduce the risk of complications such as myocardial infarction, stroke, vascular interventions, and angina in adults with risk factors for coronary heart disease and in patients with type 2 diabetes. It also reduces the risk of recurrence in patients with a history of myocardial infarction or stroke and decreases the risk of hospitalization due to congestive heart failure. In patients with hyperlipidemia, it plays a role in controlling cholesterol and triglyceride levels to improve blood lipid profile. It is particularly effective in patients with familial hypercholesterolemia and in patients with dyslipidemia that do not respond to dietary treatment. In pediatric patients with heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia, it is used to reduce total cholesterol and LDL cholesterol levels. In summary, this medication aids in improving cardiovascular health and managing hyperlipidemia, thereby assisting in the prevention and treatment of cardiovascular diseases.
For the treatment of hyperlipidemia, the recommended starting dose of atorvastatin is 10 mg once daily, and for patients requiring greater LDL cholesterol reduction, starting doses of 20 mg or 40 mg once daily may be appropriate. The dosing range is 10 to 80 mg once daily, and it should be individualized based on treatment goals and patient response. Lipid levels should be analyzed 2 to 4 weeks after the start of treatment and/or dose adjustments to inform further dosing.
For pediatric patients with heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia (ages 10-17), the recommended starting dose is 10 mg once daily, with a maximum recommended dose of 20 mg per day. Dose adjustments should be based on treatment goals and occur after at least 4 weeks.
This medication may cause muscle-related side effects, so patients should immediately consult a doctor if they experience muscle pain or weakness. Similarly, if there is a significant increase in creatine kinase levels or suspicion of myopathy, the medication should be discontinued. Patients with impaired liver function or liver disease should not be administered this medication or should use it with caution. Women who are pregnant or may become pregnant and nursing mothers should not take this medication. This medication is not to be administered to children, especially those under 10 years old. Patients with a history of alcohol abuse or liver disease, those with decreased kidney function, and elderly patients should exercise more caution when using this medication. This medication may interact with other drugs, so particularly when taken with certain antibiotics, antifungals, protease inhibitors, and some cardiovascular medications, patients should follow their doctor's instructions. If symptoms such as muscle pain, weakness, or fever appear during treatment, patients should immediately notify a hospital for testing. Additionally, if liver function abnormalities occur, the use of this medication should be discontinued and the doctor informed. Regular monitoring of liver function and muscle condition during treatment with this medication is essential. This medication may have increased blood concentration when taken with grapefruit juice, so it is advisable to avoid consuming grapefruit juice. Women requiring contraception should use appropriate contraceptive methods during treatment and should discontinue use immediately upon confirmation of pregnancy. In case of an overdose, as there is no specific antidote, treatment should be based on symptoms, with careful monitoring of liver function and muscle condition.
