Treatment of essential hypertension and reduction of cardiovascular disease risk
This medication is used to control blood pressure in patients with essential hypertension. Additionally, it helps reduce the risk of myocardial infarction, stroke, and death due to cardiovascular disease in high-risk patients aged 55 and older, particularly those with a history of coronary artery disease or stroke, or with end-organ damage due to diabetes. This improves cardiovascular health and reduces risks.
For essential hypertension, the dosage is 40 mg of telmisartan taken orally once daily with water, and it can be taken regardless of meals. Depending on the patient, 20 mg once daily may be effective, and if necessary, can be increased to 80 mg once daily. Dose adjustments should show the maximum blood pressure-lowering effects 4 to 8 weeks after starting treatment. For reducing cardiovascular disease risks, it is recommended to take 80 mg once daily.
This medication can cause serious harm to the fetus and newborn if taken during pregnancy; therefore, it should be discontinued immediately upon confirmation of pregnancy. Individuals with allergies to this medication or its components, pregnant or potentially pregnant women, breastfeeding women, patients with severe liver impairment, patients with hereditary angioedema, and patients with certain kidney disorders should not take this medication. Elderly patients, patients with high potassium levels or at risk of high potassium levels, patients with mild to moderate liver impairment, patients with heart valve disease, patients with cardiovascular disease, patients with gastrointestinal disease, patients with renovascular hypertension, and patients with severe kidney impairment should exercise caution when taking this medication. While taking this medication, adverse reactions such as infections, blood disorders, hyperkalemia, hypoglycemia, neurological symptoms, blood pressure reduction, respiratory distress, gastrointestinal disturbances, liver function abnormalities, skin rashes, myalgia, and kidney impairment may occur; consult a doctor if symptoms appear. Particular caution is advised for severe adverse reactions such as angioedema symptoms, severe allergic reactions, hyperkalemia, worsening kidney function, shock, syncope, liver dysfunction, interstitial pneumonia, and rhabdomyolysis. Patients with reduced kidney function should have regular blood tests to check potassium and creatinine levels. Low blood volume or sodium deficiency may lead to low blood pressure, so conditions should be corrected prior to taking this medication. This medication may enhance blood pressure-lowering effects when used in combination with other antihypertensive agents, therefore caution should be exercised. Inform your doctor or pharmacist of any other medications being taken, as drug interactions may occur with certain medications. Women who are pregnant or planning to become pregnant should not use this medication, and breastfeeding women should also avoid use. This medication is not recommended for children under 18 years of age, as safety and efficacy have not been established. Elderly patients should be closely monitored for the risk of stroke due to excessive blood pressure reduction. In case of overdose, symptoms such as hypotension, dizziness, and acute renal failure may appear; seek immediate medical attention. This medication should be stored out of the reach of children and kept sealed until use.
