Adult dosage
Adults and children aged 6 years and older should take 10 mg of cetirizine hydrochloride orally once daily before bedtime. Patients sensitive to side effects may take 5 mg in the morning and evening. In cases of renal impairment, dosing intervals and quantities should be adjusted based on renal function. For those with normal renal function, the dose is 10 mg once daily; for mild impairment, it’s 10 mg once daily; for moderate impairment, it’s 5 mg once daily; and for severe impairment, it’s 5 mg every other day.
Children's dosage
For children aged 6 years and over, the dosage is the same as for adults, 10 mg orally once daily before bedtime. For children with renal impairment, the dosage should be adjusted individually considering the patient's renal clearance and weight.

This medication helps relieve seasonal and perennial allergic rhinitis and allergic conjunctivitis. It also has calming effects on itching caused by chronic idiopathic urticaria and skin pruritus. In other words, it is used to effectively improve various symptoms caused by allergic reactions.

Dosage and Administration

Adult dosage

Adults and children aged 6 years and older should take 10 mg of cetirizine hydrochloride orally once daily before bedtime. Patients sensitive to side effects may take 5 mg in the morning and evening. In cases of renal impairment, dosing intervals and quantities should be adjusted based on renal function. For those with normal renal function, the dose is 10 mg once daily; for mild impairment, it’s 10 mg once daily; for moderate impairment, it’s 5 mg once daily; and for severe impairment, it’s 5 mg every other day.

Precautions

This medication should not be taken by individuals with allergies to hydroxyzine or piperazine derivatives or those with such a history. Patients with severely impaired renal function and children under 6 years old should also avoid using this medication. It is advisable not to take certain medications, such as theophylline and ritonavir, while using this drug. This is because the effectiveness or processing speed of these drugs in the body can change. Additionally, excessive alcohol consumption should be avoided while taking this medication. Taking it with alcohol may exacerbate drowsiness or other side effects. Patients with kidney or liver problems, as well as older individuals, should consult a doctor or pharmacist prior to taking this medication. Since this drug is primarily excreted through the kidneys, individuals with decreased kidney function may experience higher drug concentrations. Patients with epilepsy or those at risk of seizures should also exercise caution. This medication may worsen conditions where urination is impaired, so individuals with urinary issues such as spinal cord injury or prostatic hyperplasia should be careful. Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding should also exercise caution when taking this medication. There have been no major issues reported during pregnancy, but it is advisable to consult a doctor for safety. During breastfeeding, this medication can be excreted into breast milk and may affect the baby, so caution is advised. In case of overdose, symptoms such as confusion, drowsiness, dizziness, rapid heartbeat, and difficulty urinating may occur. Seek immediate medical attention for appropriate treatment if an overdose occurs. During use, various side effects such as drowsiness, headache, indigestion, skin rash, and liver dysfunction may arise, so consult a doctor if any abnormal symptoms occur. It is recommended to discontinue this medication 3 to 5 days before allergy testing. Caution is advised when driving or operating machinery as drowsiness or decreased concentration may occur. Lastly, this medication should be kept out of reach of children, and stored tightly in its original container with the lid secured.
