This medicine is used effectively for various infections caused by different bacteria. It helps treat respiratory infections such as acute and chronic bronchitis, pneumonia, as well as empyema, lung abscess, tonsillitis, sinusitis, and otitis media. It is also used for urinary tract infections such as cystitis, urethritis, and pyelonephritis, as well as pelvic infections and sexually transmitted diseases such as gonorrhea. It is effective against skin and soft tissue infections like boils, abscesses, cellulitis, and wound infections, osteomyelitis, and dental infections. This medicine acts against various bacteria, including those resistant to ampicillin and amoxicillin, hence widely used for the treatment of various infections caused by multiple bacteria.

How to take

Adult dose

Adults and children aged 12 years or older or weighing 40 kg or more: Administer amoxicillin/potassium clavulanate 250 mg/125 mg orally three times a day every 8 hours. In cases of severe and respiratory infections, the dosage may be increased to 500 mg/125 mg. In cases of renal impairment, dosage should be adjusted according to creatinine clearance.

Precautions

This medicine is a beta-lactam antibiotic and should not be administered to patients with a history of hypersensitivity to penicillins or cephalosporins. Caution is particularly required for patients with infectious mononucleosis or lymphocytic leukemia due to a higher risk of rash. Patients who have experienced liver dysfunction or jaundice from this medicine or penicillin in the past should also avoid its use. Patients with poor liver function or severe renal impairment may have increased drug concentration and should use it cautiously. Patients with allergies, bronchial asthma, or those prone to skin rashes need to be careful as well. Patients who have difficulty with oral intake, elderly patients, or those in poor general condition should be observed for vitamin K deficiency symptoms. Patients with gastrointestinal diseases causing vomiting or diarrhea may not absorb the drug adequately. When taking this medication, if symptoms like diarrhea, abdominal pain, or blood in stool appear, discontinue use immediately and seek medical attention. Rarely, symptoms like liver dysfunction, skin rashes, respiratory distress, or abnormal blood symptoms may occur and should be reported immediately. Caution is required when taking anticoagulants as there may be an increased risk of bleeding. It is advisable not to use this medication during the first three months of pregnancy, and consultation with a doctor is required if pregnant or breastfeeding. Use is not recommended for children under 12 years of age or weighing less than 40 kg as there is limited experience. Elderly patients should be administered with caution due to potential renal impairment and bleeding risk related to vitamin K deficiency. In case of overdose, gastrointestinal symptoms, renal failure, convulsions may appear, and immediate contact with a medical institution should be made for proper treatment. This medicine should be stored in a tightly sealed container in a dry place below 25 degrees Celsius, and allergy history along with current medications should be verified before administration.
