Treatment of essential hypertension and reduction of cardiovascular disease risk
This medication is used to control blood pressure in patients with essential hypertension. Additionally, it is effective in reducing the risk of death from myocardial infarction, stroke, and cardiovascular diseases in high-risk patients over the age of 55 who have a high risk of cardiovascular diseases such as coronary artery disease, peripheral artery disease, and stroke. Specifically, this medication can be used as an alternative treatment when ACE inhibitors cannot be used. Therefore, it aids in managing essential hypertension and reducing the risk of cardiovascular diseases.
Telmisartan should be taken orally once daily at a dose of 40 mg with water, and can be taken with or without food. Depending on the patient, a lower dose of 20 mg once daily may be effective. If necessary, the dosage can be increased to 80 mg once daily, and when increasing the dosage, the maximum antihypertensive effect is observed 4 to 8 weeks after starting treatment. For the reduction of cardiovascular disease risk, the recommended dose is 80 mg once a day.
This medication can cause serious harm to the fetus and newborn during pregnancy, so treatment should be discontinued immediately upon confirmation of pregnancy. Women who are pregnant or may become pregnant, as well as nursing mothers, should not take this medication. Patients with severe liver impairment or problems with bile excretion should also avoid this medication. Patients with hereditary angioedema or a history of angioedema should avoid this medication. Patients with moderate to severe kidney impairment among diabetes patients should not take this medication with certain other drugs. Patients with genetic disorders such as lactose intolerance should also avoid this medication. Elderly patients or those with high serum potassium levels or impaired liver function should use this medication with caution. Precautions are also necessary for patients with heart valve disease or related cardiovascular conditions. Excessive blood pressure lowering may increase the risk of myocardial infarction or stroke, so careful blood pressure management is advisable. Patients with kidney-related conditions or severe renal impairment should also be cautious as there is a risk of worsening kidney function when taking this medication. When used with other antihypertensives or specific medications, the risk of side effects may increase due to interactions, so consultation with a physician is recommended. This medication has a blood pressure-lowering effect, so any symptoms of hypotension should be reported immediately, and appropriate treatment should be received if necessary. Serious side effects such as liver dysfunction, angioedema, hyperkalemia, renal impairment, shock, interstitial pneumonia, and rhabdomyolysis may rarely occur, so any unusual symptoms should be reported to a physician immediately. This medication is contraindicated during pregnancy and should be avoided by nursing women. Safety in pediatric patients has not been established, thus it is recommended that individuals under 18 years should not take this medication. In cases of overdose, symptoms such as hypotension, dizziness, and acute renal failure may occur, so the dosage must be followed strictly, and immediate medical attention should be sought in case of overdose. This medication should be kept out of reach of children and stored sealed until just before administration.
