  • Disturbance in blood sugar control in patients with type 2 diabetes
View approved original text

This drug serves to aid in blood sugar control for patients with type 2 diabetes through dietary and exercise therapy. It can be used alone or in combination with insulin or metformin when adequate blood sugar control is not achieved with oral antidiabetic agents. Additionally, if blood sugar control is insufficient with sulfonylureas or metformin monotherapy, this drug can be administered alongside metformin to enhance effectiveness. Therefore, this drug is used as an effective treatment for improving blood sugar management.

How to take

Adult dose

Administered orally once a day. Start with 1 mg of glimepiride and may increase the dose by 1 mg at 1 to 2 week intervals. Generally, additional effects are minimal with doses above 4 mg; however, it may be increased to 6 mg or 8 mg if needed. If the 4 mg daily dose fails, consider switching to insulin therapy or combination therapy.

Precautions

This drug should not be used in patients with insulin-dependent diabetes, diabetic ketoacidosis, or in a comatose state. Patients allergic to this drug or its components, or to sulfonylureas, should also not receive this medication. As there is no experience using this drug in patients with severely impaired liver or kidney function, insulin therapy is recommended in such cases. Women who are pregnant or may become pregnant, as well as breastfeeding women, should not use this drug. It is advisable to opt for insulin therapy instead of this drug in cases of severe infections, before and after surgery, or after significant injury. Patients with gastrointestinal disturbances such as diarrhea or vomiting are at risk of hypoglycemia due to improper nutrient absorption and should be cautious. This drug contains lactose, so patients with lactose intolerance or inherited lactose metabolism disorders should not take it. During the first week of taking this medication, the risk of hypoglycemia is increased, so blood sugar levels should be frequently monitored. Elderly patients, those in poor nutritional status, patients with irregular meals, those who frequently consume alcohol, and those with impaired liver or kidney function are at even higher risk of hypoglycemia, so careful management is necessary. This drug contains the dye Yellow No. 4; patients allergic to this component should be cautious. When taking this drug, it is important to be aware of hypoglycemia symptoms, and if hypoglycemia occurs, sugars should be consumed immediately to control it. Hypoglycemia symptoms may include headache, extreme hunger, nausea, fatigue, anxiety, confusion, drowsiness, and loss of consciousness. If such symptoms occur, immediate action should be taken. Occasionally, abnormal liver function or changes in blood cell counts or allergic reactions may occur, so any unusual symptoms should be reported to a healthcare provider immediately. This drug should be taken regularly, and dietary and exercise therapies should be implemented together for optimal blood sugar control. When taking other medications, they may affect blood sugar control, so it's important to discuss all medications with a healthcare professional or pharmacist. In particular, blood sugar changes may occur when combined with beta-blockers, certain antibiotics, or steroids. Pregnant or breastfeeding women should not take this drug and should switch to insulin therapy if necessary. For children under 18 years of age, safety and efficacy have not been established, so use should be avoided. Elderly individuals often have decreased kidney function, so dosages should be adjusted and taken with caution. If overdose occurs, severe hypoglycemia may arise, requiring immediate emergency treatment and appropriate measures according to a doctor's instructions. This drug should be kept out of reach of children and stored in its original container for safety.
