Treatment of genital herpes and suppression of recurrence; treatment of shingles
This medication is used to treat herpes zoster virus infections and genital herpes infections. It also helps to suppress recurrences of recurrent genital herpes. Patients can expect symptom relief and a decrease in recurrences with this medication.
1. Treatment of herpes zoster Adults: Administer famciclovir 250 mg orally per dose, 3 times daily for 7 days. It is preferable to start treatment as soon as symptoms appear after infection. 2. Treatment of an initial episode of genital herpes Adults: Administer 250 mg of this product orally per dose, 3 times daily for 5 days. It is preferable to start treatment as soon as symptoms appear after infection. 3. Treatment of acute recurrent genital herpes Adults: Administer 125 mg of this product orally per dose, twice daily for 5 days. It is preferable to start treatment during the prodromal period or as soon as symptoms appear after infection. 4. Suppression of recurrent genital herpes Adults: Administer 250 mg of this product orally per dose, twice daily. Temporarily discontinue treatment periodically every 6~12 months to assess whether the natural course of the disease has changed. 5. Patients with renal impairment: Since the clearance of this product is reduced in patients with renal impairment, use caution when adjusting the dose. The dosage and administration for these patients are as follows. 1) Treatment of herpes zoster and an initial episode of genital herpes: Creatinine clearance (mL/min/1.73㎡) 30~59 250 mg per dose, twice daily 10~29 250 mg per dose, once daily 2) Treatment of acute recurrent genital herpes: Creatinine clearance (mL/min/1.73㎡) 30~59 125 mg per dose, twice daily 10~29 125 mg per dose, once daily 3) Suppression of recurrent genital herpes: Creatinine clearance (mL/min/1.73㎡) 30~59 250 mg per dose, twice daily 10~29 125 mg per dose, twice daily 4) If only serum creatinine is known, creatinine clearance can be calculated using the following equations. Men: {body weight (kg) × (140-age)}/ {72 × serum creatinine (mg/dL)} Women: 0.85 × the value calculated for men 5) Patients with renal impairment undergoing hemodialysis For patients undergoing hemodialysis, administration every 48 hours is preferable, taking the interval between dialysis sessions into account. Four hours of hemodialysis reduces the plasma concentration of this product by approximately 75%; therefore, administer this product immediately after dialysis. The recommended dose is 250mg for patients with herpes zoster and 125mg for patients with genital herpes. 6. Patients with hepatic impairment: No dose adjustment is necessary in patients with chronic compensated liver disease. There is insufficient treatment experience in patients with overt chronic decompensated liver disease, and no clear recommended dose has been established.
This medication should not be used in certain patients. For example, patients who are allergic to this medication or its ingredients, or those with genetic lactose-related problems should not take it. Patients with impaired renal function should use this drug with caution, and dose adjustments may be necessary. Mild side effects such as headache or nausea may occur while taking this medication, and rarely blood disorders such as thrombocytopenia or leukopenia have been reported. Additionally, symptoms such as dizziness, drowsiness, hallucinations, increased heart rate, gastrointestinal discomfort, liver function abnormalities, skin rashes, and itching may occur. In patients with poor renal function, acute renal failure may rarely occur, hence caution is necessary. This medication does not cure genital herpes, and during symptomatic periods, sexual contact should be avoided, and safe sex should be maintained. If dizziness or drowsiness occurs, it is advisable to refrain from driving or operating machinery. For patients with mild to moderate liver impairment, no special dosage adjustment is required, but safety is not confirmed for patients with severe liver impairment, thus caution should be exercised. This drug does not typically cause significant interactions with other medications; however, when taken with certain drugs such as probenecid, blood levels may increase, warranting monitoring for toxicity. Women who are pregnant or may become pregnant should carefully weigh the benefits and risks of taking this medication, and nursing mothers should also exercise caution. Children under 18 years of age should ideally not use this medication since safety and efficacy have not been established. In elderly patients, dosage adjustments may be necessary if there are issues with renal function. In case of overdose, appropriate treatment is needed, and blood dialysis can lower drug concentrations in the body. When stored, it should be kept in a tightly closed container in a dry place below 30 degrees Celsius and out of reach of children, and it is advisable not to transfer to another container.
Not everyone experiences these, and they can vary from person to person.
This medication should be stored in a tightly sealed container to avoid exposure to air or moisture. Additionally, it is best to store it in a cool, dry place below 30 degrees Celsius.
