This medication is used for the treatment of moderate to severe Alzheimer's disease.

How to take

Adult dose

This medication is taken orally once daily and should be administered at the same time every day. It may be increased to twice daily as needed. During the first 3 weeks, the dose should be increased by 5mg weekly until the maintenance dosage is reached. Week 1 (Day 1 to 7): Take 5mg once daily. Week 2 (Day 8 to 14): Take 10mg once daily. Week 3 (Day 15 to 21): Take 15mg once daily. From week 4 onward: Take 20mg once daily.

Precautions

This medication should not be administered to certain patients. Firstly, it should not be used in patients with an allergy to its components, those with severe liver dysfunction, and patients with greatly reduced kidney function. In addition, it contains lactose, thus it should not be administered to patients with lactose intolerance or certain genetic metabolic disorders. Secondly, caution is required when administering to some patients. Patients with epilepsy or those who have experienced seizures in the past, as well as patients at risk for seizures, need to be monitored carefully. Furthermore, when used in combination with other medications that have similar effects, the risk of side effects may increase, therefore co-administration should be avoided. Additionally, this medication may interact with other drugs, so if the patient is taking other medications, it is essential to consult with a physician or pharmacist. Particularly, caution is necessary when co-administering anticoagulants, certain gastrointestinal medications, and psychiatric medications. Women who are pregnant or may become pregnant should carefully consider the risks and benefits of this medication, and breastfeeding mothers are advised to stop breastfeeding while on this medication. It is advisable not to use this medication for children or adolescents under 18 years of age as safety and efficacy have not been established. In cases of overdose, symptoms such as confusion, drowsiness, hallucinations, and seizures may occur, and in such a case, immediate medical attention is required. This medication may decrease the speed of response and attention, thus caution is necessary when driving or operating machinery. Lastly, this medication must be stored out of reach of children, and it is safer to keep it in its original packaging without changing containers.
