Reduction of the risk of myocardial infarction and stroke, and improvement of hyperlipidemia
This medication is mainly used to reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases. It particularly helps to lower the risks of myocardial infarction and stroke in adults at risk of coronary heart disease or patients with type 2 diabetes. It also reduces the likelihood of complications following vascular procedures and hospitalizations for stable angina and congestive heart failure. It is effective in treating hyperlipidemia and is used to improve cholesterol and triglyceride levels in patients with various types of dyslipidemia. It is beneficial for specific hypercholesterolemia patients who cannot control their condition through diet, especially in pediatric patients with family history or other cardiovascular disease risk factors. This medication is used to maintain cardiovascular health and reduce the risk of related diseases.
For hyperlipidemia, the recommended initial dose is 10 mg of atorvastatin once daily. For patients requiring further reduction of LDL-cholesterol levels, treatment may begin with 20 mg or 40 mg once daily. The dose range is 10 to 80 mg once daily. Doses should be individualized based on treatment objectives and patient characteristics, and lipid levels should be analyzed 2 to 4 weeks after initiation or dose adjustment.
The recommended initial dose for pediatric patients (10 to 17 years old) with heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia is 10 mg once daily, and the recommended maximum dose is 20 mg once daily. The administered dose should be adjusted based on the patient's treatment goals.
