Treatment of peripheral and central neuropathic pain, adjunct for partial seizures in epilepsy, improvement of fibromyalgia
This medication is used to alleviate peripheral and central neuropathic pain in adults. It is also utilized as an adjunctive treatment for controlling partial seizures in patients with epilepsy and can be applied when there are secondary generalized symptoms. It reduces pain associated with fibromyalgia and improves the quality of life for patients. It is an effective drug for improving pain and seizure symptoms related to various neurological disorders.
This medication is taken orally divided into two doses per day without regard to food. 1. Neuropathic Pain - Peripheral Neuropathic Pain: The starting dose is 150 mg per day, which can be increased to 300 mg after 3 to 7 days. If necessary, it can be further increased to a maximum daily dose of 600 mg every 7 days. - Central Neuropathic Pain: The starting dose is 150 mg per day.
The safety and efficacy data for children under 12 years and adolescents aged 12 to 17 years are insufficient, therefore administration is not recommended.
This medication can cause mental health issues such as suicidal thoughts or behaviors, hence it is essential to closely monitor mood or behavioral changes during treatment. Those who are allergic to this drug should not take it. Diabetic patients may experience weight gain while taking this medication, which may require adjustments in the dosage of blood sugar control medications. If symptoms of angioedema appear, such as swelling of the face, mouth, or throat, the medication should be stopped immediately. Elderly patients may experience dizziness or drowsiness when taking this medication, which increases the risk of falls. Some patients may experience blurred vision or vision changes, which can improve after discontinuation of the medication. Care should be taken when switching from other antiepileptic drugs to monotherapy. Abrupt discontinuation of this medication can lead to withdrawal symptoms such as insomnia, headache, nausea, and anxiety; therefore, dosage should be tapered gradually. There is a risk of drug abuse, so patients with a history of substance abuse should be particularly cautious. Patients with impaired kidney function may require dosage adjustments of this medication. Patients with heart diseases should take this medication with caution, especially those with congestive heart failure who should be particularly careful. Co-administration with opioid analgesics may increase the risk of central nervous system depression; caution is recommended. Patients with respiratory or neurological disorders, kidney impairment, and elderly patients may have an increased risk of severe respiratory depression and may require dose adjustments. Pregnant women should avoid taking this medication during the early stages of pregnancy due to the risk of fetal malformations, and women of childbearing age should use effective contraception. This medication is excreted in breast milk; therefore, it is recommended to avoid taking it while breastfeeding. Dizziness or drowsiness may occur while driving or operating machinery, hence caution should be taken until symptoms fully resolve. If severe skin rashes or allergic symptoms occur, the medication should be stopped immediately and a healthcare provider should be consulted. In cases of overdose, symptoms such as confusion, drowsiness, depression, or seizures may occur, requiring immediate medical attention.
