This medication helps prevent and manage asthma continuously. It is also used to alleviate symptoms of seasonal and perennial allergic rhinitis.

How to take

Adult dose

This medication should be taken once daily; for asthma patients, it is advised to take it in the evening, while for allergic rhinitis patients, the timing of the dose should be adjusted according to the patient's condition. Patients with both asthma and allergic rhinitis should take 1 tablet in the evening once daily. This medication should be administered 1 hour before a meal or 2 hours after a meal.

Child dose

Children aged 6 to 14 years should chew 5 mg of montelukast once daily. This medication should be administered 1 hour before a meal or 2 hours after a meal.

Precautions

This medication is used to prevent and treat asthma and allergic rhinitis. During the use of this medication, neuropsychiatric symptoms may occur, so both the patient and the caregiver should carefully observe for symptoms such as restlessness, anxiety, depression, hallucinations, and suicidal thoughts. If any of these neuropsychiatric symptoms or behavioral changes occur, discontinue use immediately and consult a physician. This medication contains aspartame, an artificial sweetener, which is broken down into phenylalanine; therefore, patients with phenylketonuria should avoid it. This medication is not intended for use during an acute asthma attack; an emergency inhaler should be used when acute symptoms are present. It should not be used alone for exercise-induced bronchospasm; bronchodilator therapy should be continued as needed. Patients with hypersensitivity to aspirin or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs should not take these medications together with this drug. This medication can rarely cause serious side effects such as systemic eosinophilia and vasculitis, so if symptoms like eosinophilia, skin rashes, or exacerbation of lung symptoms occur, medical attention should be sought immediately. No significant drug interactions have been reported with other medications; however, caution is advised when using with certain drugs that induce liver metabolism. It should only be used during pregnancy when absolutely necessary, and caution is necessary when breastfeeding. It is also safe for use in children and the elderly, but dosage adjustments and caution are essential based on age. In case of overdose, there is no specific antidote, so general emergency care and symptom observation are important. This medication should be kept out of reach of children and it is recommended not to transfer it to another container. While taking this medication, you should take it consistently as directed by your physician, and consult immediately if symptoms worsen or new symptoms appear.
