Improvement of excessive sleepiness associated with narcolepsy in adults
This medication is used to improve excessive sleepiness associated with narcolepsy in adults.
Adults: Take 150mg once daily in the morning. The dose may be increased to a maximum of 250mg daily. The dose should be adjusted when coadministered with CYP3A4 substrate drugs such as triazolam and cyclosporine. Drugs eliminated through CYP2C9 and CYP2C19 metabolism, such as phenytoin, or mainly through CYP2C19 metabolism, such as diazepam, propranolol, and S-mephenytoin, have prolonged elimination when coadministered with this medicine; therefore, dose reduction and monitoring for toxicity are required. The dose should be reduced in patients with severe hepatic impairment.
This medication may not restore normal alertness in patients who experience severe abnormal sleepiness, therefore, the level of sleepiness should be monitored frequently during treatment. It is advisable to avoid activities such as driving or operating dangerous machinery until the sleepiness has completely resolved. Severe skin rashes can occur while taking this medication, and it is recommended not to use it in children. If a rash appears, the medication should be discontinued immediately and a doctor should be consulted. This medication can cause serious allergic reactions such as angioedema or anaphylaxis, so immediate treatment is necessary if symptoms such as swelling of the face or neck or difficulty breathing arise. A serious systemic reaction called multiorgan hypersensitivity may occur rarely, so if symptoms such as fever, rash, or liver function abnormalities appear, the medication should be discontinued and medical assistance sought. Patients with mental health issues may experience a worsening of symptoms during treatment with this medication, so their condition should be regularly monitored, and if symptoms such as depression, anxiety, or psychotic symptoms arise, treatment should be discontinued immediately. This medication can affect the heart or blood pressure, so an electrocardiogram should be obtained before use, and blood pressure and heart rate should be monitored regularly. Patients with heart disease or hypertension should use this medication with caution. Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding, children under 18 years of age, patients with moderate to severe hypertension, patients with arrhythmias, and those with allergies to the ingredients should not take this medication. Women of childbearing age should establish an effective contraception plan before taking this medication, as it may reduce the effectiveness of oral contraceptives, necessitating additional contraceptive methods. Patients with severely impaired liver or kidney function may require dose adjustments while taking this medication, and elderly patients should also adjust their dose according to their body function. This medication may cause a range of side effects such as headaches, nausea, dizziness, insomnia, anxiety, loss of appetite, fatigue, palpitations, abdominal discomfort, restlessness, constipation, contact dermatitis, depressed mood, attention deficit, shortness of breath, sweating, increased gamma-glutamyl transferase (GGT), increased heart rate, influenza-like illness, loose stools, migraines, irritability, pain, sensory abnormalities, polyuria, and fever. In case of overdose, symptoms such as insomnia, confusion, and arrhythmias may occur, therefore, it is crucial to adhere strictly to the prescribed dose and seek immediate treatment if any abnormal symptoms arise. This medication has the potential for dependence or abuse, so patients with a history of abuse of central nervous system stimulants or narcotics should be monitored closely. Finally, this medication can interact with other drugs, so it is essential to inform the healthcare provider about any other medications being taken, and to use it according to the doctor's instructions.
