Treatment of obesity (weight loss and maintenance) and prevention of weight regain
This medication is applicable to obese patients with a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or greater, or those with a BMI of 27 or greater who have risk factors such as hypertension, diabetes, or dyslipidemia. It is effective in assisting weight loss or maintenance when used in conjunction with a calorie-reduced diet, and helps decrease the risk of weight regain. It helps effectively manage obesity and maintain a healthy weight.
The recommended dose of this drug is 120mg of orlistat orally per dose, 3 times daily, with meals containing fat or within 1 hour after a meal. Patients should continue a nutritionally balanced, mildly hypocaloric diet in which approximately 30% of calories are derived from fat. The daily intake of fat, carbohydrates, and protein should be distributed evenly among three meals. This drug may be omitted if a meal is skipped or if a meal contains no fat. Because this drug may reduce the absorption of some fat-soluble vitamins and beta-carotene, patients are advised to take a multivitamin containing fat-soluble vitamins to ensure adequate nutrition. The vitamin supplement should be taken at least 2 hours before or at least 2 hours after this drug, such as at bedtime. Taking more than 120mg per dose, 3 times daily, does not increase the effectiveness of this drug. Based on measurements of fecal fat, the effect of this drug appears 24 ∼ 48 hours after taking it. After discontinuation of treatment, fecal fat content generally returns to pretreatment levels within 48 ∼ 72 hours. The efficacy and safety of this drug have not been evaluated for periods exceeding 4 years. Studies have not been conducted in patients with hepatic and/or renal impairment or in elderly patients.
Studies have not been conducted in children under 12 years of age.
This medication should not be administered to patients with chronic malabsorption syndrome or cholestasis. It should also be avoided by individuals with allergies to this drug or its components, as well as pregnant or potentially pregnant women, and breastfeeding women. Caution should be exercised when administering this medication to patients with liver dysfunction. Patients should immediately inform their doctor and discontinue use if symptoms of liver damage appear, and liver function tests are important. Additionally, patients with hyperoxaluria or calcium oxalate nephrolithiasis require caution. Taking this medication may result in gastrointestinal symptoms such as abdominal distension, flatulence, constipation, fatty stools, fecal incontinence, and increased bowel movements. These symptoms are generally mild and temporary, usually occurring within 3 months of starting treatment. However, in some patients, symptoms may persist for more than 6 months. Rare but serious side effects such as liver dysfunction, hypersensitivity reactions, and pancreatitis have been reported, so immediate consultation with healthcare providers is necessary if such symptoms occur. This medication inhibits fat absorption, which may reduce the absorption of fat-soluble vitamins (such as vitamins A, D, E, K) and beta-carotene. Therefore, it is recommended to take vitamin supplements, ideally 2 hours before or after this medication. When using this medication, it is important to evenly distribute fatty intake across three meals a day, as taking it with a very high-fat meal may increase gastrointestinal side effects. This drug may affect blood coagulation, so patients on anticoagulants should regularly monitor their coagulation levels. This medication may interact with certain drugs, so patients taking other medications should inform their doctor or pharmacist. Caution is particularly needed when taken with cyclosporine, antiretrovirals, and anticonvulsants. It is safer for pregnant and breastfeeding women to avoid this medication, and its use in children under 12 years is also not recommended. No specific serious side effects have been reported due to overdose, but observation for 24 hours is advised. This medication should be kept out of reach of children, stored in its original packaging, and protected from light and moisture.
Not everyone experiences these, and they can vary from person to person.
This medication should be stored in a tightly sealed container to protect it from air, light, and moisture. Additionally, it is important to keep it at a cool temperature below 25 degrees Celsius to maintain its efficacy.
