This medication helps to prevent the occurrence of asthma and control symptoms continuously. It is also used to relieve various symptoms caused by seasonal and chronic allergic rhinitis, such as nasal congestion, sneezing, and runny nose. It is effective in improving respiratory health by managing both asthma and allergic rhinitis.

How to take

Adult dose

This medication should be taken once daily, but asthma patients should take it in the evening. For asthma or allergic rhinitis, take 1 chewable tablet (4 mg) once in the evening. This should be administered 1 hour before meals or 2 hours after meals.

Child dose

For children aged 2 to 5 years, take 4 mg of montelukast once daily as a chewable tablet. This should be administered 1 hour before meals or 2 hours after meals.

Precautions

This medication has been reported to cause serious neuropsychiatric side effects, so if symptoms such as agitation, anxiety, depression, hallucinations, or suicidal thoughts occur while taking it, consult a doctor immediately. This medication contains the artificial sweetener aspartame, so it should not be taken by patients with the genetic disorder phenylketonuria. This medication contains lactose and should not be taken by patients with genetic problems like galactose intolerance, lactase deficiency, or glucose-galactose malabsorption. This medication is not for use during an acute asthma attack, so separate emergency medications should be prepared for emergencies. While taking this medication, the dosage of inhaled corticosteroids may be gradually reduced; however, it should not be abruptly substituted with other steroid medications. Do not use it alone to treat exercise-induced bronchospasm; inhaled β-agonists should be used as needed. Patients with aspirin sensitivity should not take aspirin or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs while taking this medication. Rarely, systemic eosinophilia and vasculitis symptoms may occur while taking this medication, so if symptoms are suspected, a doctor should be consulted. This medication has not been reported to have significant drug interactions when used with other asthma medications, but monitoring according to a doctor's guidance may be necessary when used with certain drugs. Consult a doctor before taking this medication if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, and it should only be taken when clearly necessary. It can also be used by children and elderly patients; however, appropriate dosages and precautions should be observed according to age. There is no specific antidote for overdose, so general symptomatic treatment should be followed according to a doctor's instructions. Store this medication out of reach of children and do not transfer it to another container.
