Prevention of zinc deficiency and improvement of nutritional status
When administering total parenteral nutrition (TPN), zinc is an essential mineral for maintaining bodily functions and tissue recovery, so it must be supplemented adequately. Zinc supplementation helps enhance immunity and wound healing and supports normal growth and development. Therefore, during TPN, zinc supplementation is used to improve nutritional status and prevent complications.
Metabolically stable TPN patients: 2.5 to 4 mg/day Adult patients with fluid loss from the intestines: an additional 12.2 mg/L (fluid loss) or an additional 17.1 mg/kg (excreted amount) Acute burn state: 4.5 to 6 mg/day Use as prescribed by a physician and adjust dosage based on plasma trace element levels.
Pediatric patients under 5 years: 100 ug/kg/day Premature infants weighing less than 3 kg: 300 ug/kg/day
This medication should not be administered directly into the peripheral vein without dilution. Administering it directly into the peripheral vein may increase the risk of phlebitis or kidney damage due to zinc. As the zinc content is very low, serious toxic symptoms due to this drug are very rare. When mixing this drug with TPN solution, it is advisable to work in a laminar flow environment to maintain sterility. Moreover, parenteral medications should be visually inspected for precipitate or discoloration prior to administration. When zinc is administered with copper, the serum copper levels may decrease, so regular monitoring of plasma copper and zinc levels should be conducted to inform dosing. This medication is excreted from the body through the intestines and kidneys, so patients with abnormalities in excretory organs should consider the possibility of zinc accumulation in the body. The safety of this drug has not been established in pregnant women or women who may become pregnant, therefore it should only be used cautiously when the benefits of treatment are judged to outweigh the risks. Zinc can cross the placenta and can be found in breast milk. In cases of overdose, symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, dehydration, electrolyte imbalances, dizziness, abdominal pain, drowsiness, and ataxia may occur, and in severe cases, it can be fatal. Calcium supplementation may help prevent the toxicity of zinc. This medication should be stored out of reach of children and kept in its original packaging in a dry place at room temperature. It does not contain preservatives, therefore any unused portion should be discarded.
Not everyone experiences these, and they can vary from person to person.
This medication should be stored in a sealed container to prevent air and moisture infiltration, and the storage temperature should be maintained between 1 degree Celsius and 30 degrees Celsius. Storing it this way will help preserve its efficacy.
