Prevention of acute organ rejection after allogeneic kidney transplantation
This medication is used to prevent acute organ rejection in patients who have received a renal transplant. It is particularly effective in combination with cyclosporine and corticosteroids to prevent rejection. This helps maintain stable function of the transplanted kidney.
This medicine should be started as soon as possible after transplantation in patients who have recently undergone a kidney transplant. Administer 720 mg of mycophenolic acid orally twice daily without chewing (total daily dose: 1,440 mg). This medicine may be taken with or without food; however, take it either on an empty stomach (1 hour before a meal) or 2 hours after a meal, and continue to take it at the selected times. No dose adjustment is necessary in elderly patients. No dose adjustment is necessary in patients with delayed graft function after transplantation. Patients with severe chronic renal impairment (glomerular filtration rate < 25 mL/min/1.73 ㎡) should be monitored carefully. In these patients, the dose should not exceed 1,440 mg per day. No dose adjustment is necessary in kidney transplant patients with severe hepatic parenchymal disease. Kidney transplant rejection does not alter the pharmacokinetics of mycophenolic acid. Discontinuation or dose reduction of this medicine is not necessary.
Safety and efficacy in patients 18 years of age or younger have not been established.
Women of childbearing potential must use contraception while taking this medication, as its use during pregnancy significantly increases the risk of miscarriage and congenital anomalies. This drug should not be used while breastfeeding, as it suppresses the immune system, increasing the risk of infections and the possibility of malignancies such as lymphoma. Therefore, it should be administered in a facility managed by a specialist with experience in immunosuppressive therapy, and regular blood tests and health checks are required. Individuals allergic to this drug or its components, those with certain genetic disorders, pregnant or breastfeeding women, or individuals with lactose intolerance should not be given this drug. Patients with severely impaired kidney function or significant gastrointestinal disorders should use this medication cautiously, as there is a risk of adverse reactions. During the use of this drug, if symptoms of infection, bleeding, or bruising appear, medical personnel should be informed immediately; special attention should be given to infection prevention due to increased infection risk from immunosuppression. This drug can cause various side effects, including reduced blood cell counts, gastrointestinal disturbances, hypertension, rashes, and liver dysfunction; therefore, regular monitoring is necessary. Particularly, the risk of side effects is heightened when this drug is used in conjunction with other immunosuppressants, necessitating extra caution during concurrent administration. The use of this drug during pregnancy can pose serious risks to the fetus, so women planning to become pregnant should consult a doctor before initiating treatment, and rigorous contraception is required during therapy. Male patients should also practice contraception for a period during and after treatment. This drug is secreted in breast milk and can be harmful to infants, so it should not be taken while breastfeeding. This drug can interact with specific medications, so any other drugs being taken must be disclosed to medical personnel, and live vaccinations should be avoided. In case of overdose, excessive immunosuppression can lead to serious infections or blood disorders, warranting immediate medical intervention. This drug should be stored out of reach of children, and when handled in crushed or powder form, inhalation or skin contact should be avoided.
