This medication is used for the treatment and prevention of gastroesophageal reflux disease and erosive esophagitis. It is also effective when used in combination with antibiotics for the treatment of duodenal ulcers and peptic ulcers caused by Helicobacter pylori infection. It provides short-term relief of gastrointestinal symptoms caused by the use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and helps treat and prevent gastric and duodenal ulcers resulting from them. It is also used for the treatment of Zollinger-Ellison syndrome and maintenance therapy after preventing rebleeding from gastric and duodenal ulcers. It is widely applicable for various gastrointestinal diseases and symptom improvement.

Precautions

This medication should not be administered to certain patients. Patients with hypersensitivity to this medication, its components, or benzimidazole derivatives should not use this medication. Furthermore, patients currently taking certain heart-related medications or antiviral agents, nursing mothers, or patients with a history of myocardial infarction should also refrain from using this medication. This medication can cause various adverse reactions, so caution is needed. Gastrointestinal symptoms such as headaches, abdominal pain, diarrhea, nausea, and vomiting may occur frequently, and rarely blood abnormalities, skin rashes, and liver function abnormalities may develop. Electrolyte abnormalities such as hypomagnesemia or neuropsychiatric symptoms have also been reported, so if symptoms occur, consult a doctor immediately. If this medication is used for a long time, regular examinations are necessary, and if symptoms suggestive of malignant tumors appear, a precise diagnosis should be obtained first. Additionally, this medication inhibits gastric acid secretion, which may increase the risk of bacterial infection in the gastrointestinal tract, so if symptoms such as diarrhea persist, inform the medical staff. There are many drug interactions, so particularly if taking antibiotics, anticoagulants, antiviral agents, or anticonvulsants, consult a doctor or pharmacist. This medication may alter the blood concentration of certain drugs, increasing the risk of side effects, so caution is needed when co-administered. The safety of this medication during pregnancy has not been fully established, so it should be used only when necessary under the judgment of a physician, and it is advisable not to use this medication while nursing.
