This medication is primarily used for the prevention and treatment of vitamin C deficiency. It addresses acute deficiency issues such as scurvy and is helpful in situations where there is an increased need for vitamin C, such as during pregnancy or lactation, and for individuals engaged in heavy physical labor. Additionally, it is effective in cases of capillary bleeding (epistaxis, gingival bleeding, hematuria), during the administration of certain medications (salicylates, atropine, etc.), and in promoting bone organizm formation and healing during fractures. Regarding skin, it also helps improve melasma, freckles, post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, and photosensitivity dermatitis. Overall, it is effectively used for vitamin C deficiency and related metabolic disorders.

How it is given

Adult administration

As ascorbic acid, 50 to 1,000 mg should be administered subcutaneously, intramuscularly, or intravenously once to several times daily. Adjust according to age and symptoms.

Precautions

This medication should not be used in patients who have hypersensitivity to this drug or any of its components. Care should be taken in patients with hyperoxaluria, Mediterranean anemia, gout, cystinuria, and G6PD deficiency, as administration of this drug may pose risks. Particularly, patients with kidney stones should be cautious as dosages exceeding 1 gram per day may worsen the stone condition. Side effects such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, heartburn, abdominal cramps, fatigue, flushing, headache, and insomnia may occur with the use of this medication. Exceeding a dosage of 1 gram per day may increase the risk of diarrhea and kidney stone due to acidification of the urine. Moreover, taking high doses of more than 600 milligrams daily may result in a diuretic effect. Patients with G6PD deficiency should be cautious as high doses of this medication may carry a risk of hemolytic events. Excessive dosing can lead to hyperoxaluria or precipitation of oxalates, urates, cystine, etc., in the urinary tract, potentially increasing the burden on the kidneys. This medication is primarily taken orally, but if there are absorption issues in the gastrointestinal tract or oral administration is difficult, it can be administered as an injection, with a recommendation to switch to oral intake upon improvement of the condition. Interactions may arise when this medication is taken in combination with certain drugs, so caution is necessary when taken with aspirin, iron preparations, certain anti-epileptic medications, oral contraceptives, antibiotics, etc. During pregnancy, the safety for the fetus has not been fully confirmed, so this medication should only be used if deemed necessary, avoiding high doses. This drug can be partially transmitted through breast milk, but no significant risk has been reported for infants at typical dosages. This medication may affect some clinical test results, so it is advisable to inform the healthcare provider about its use during testing. In case of overdose, the risk of diarrhea and kidney stones increases, as well as diuretic effects, so if unusual symptoms occur, stop taking it immediately and visit a hospital. When administered as an injection, there may be temporary mild pain at the injection site, and care is needed especially when administering to infants and children. IV administration should be done slowly to minimize temporary dizziness or phlebitis.
