Improvement of blood sugar control in type 2 diabetes
This medication helps control blood sugar levels in patients with type 2 diabetes. It is used in conjunction with dietary and exercise therapies to improve blood sugar management. It can be used alone, or sometimes in combination with other glucose-lowering medications or insulin for better control of blood sugar levels. For example, it can be used in conjunction with insulin when control with oral antidiabetic agents is difficult, and it may also be used alongside sulfonylureas or metformin. This medication is used in various ways to effectively improve blood sugar in patients.
Individual adjustment is required for each patient. This medication is administered orally once daily, swallowed whole with more than 1/2 cup of water. It should be taken before breakfast or immediately before the first meal, and it is essential not to skip meals after taking this medication. 1. Monotherapy - The initial dose should begin at 1 mg of glimepiride once daily. - The dose can be increased by 1 mg every 1 to 2 weeks as needed. - If dosing fails at 4 mg per day, consider switching to insulin therapy first, and if that is not appropriate, consider combination therapy with insulin or other oral diabetes medications.
This medication should not be used in patients with type 1 diabetes, diabetic ketoacidosis, or those in a comatose state. Additionally, it should not be administered to patients with allergies to this medication or sulfonylureas, those with severe liver or kidney dysfunction, and pregnant or breastfeeding women. For patients with severe infections, pre- and post-surgery, or severe trauma, insulin therapy is recommended, and patients with gastrointestinal issues should be cautious of hypoglycemia risk. In the early stages of treatment, the risk of hypoglycemia is higher, so blood sugar levels should be closely monitored, especially in patients who are malnourished, have irregular meals, are elderly, have reduced liver or kidney function, or are taking other medications. Hypoglycemia symptoms can include headache, severe hunger, nausea, fatigue, confusion, drowsiness, and loss of consciousness, so immediate sugar intake is necessary if symptoms occur. Furthermore, this medication may cause various side effects such as liver dysfunction, blood abnormalities, allergic reactions, and gastrointestinal disturbances, so any unusual symptoms should be reported immediately to a doctor or pharmacist. When taking this medication, it is important to adhere to dietary and exercise regimens, as well as to take it regularly. In the event of hypoglycemia, consuming sugar or sugary drinks can alleviate symptoms, while artificial sweeteners are ineffective. When combined with other medications, blood sugar control may be affected, so it is essential to inform the doctor of any other medications being taken. Pregnant or breastfeeding women should not use this medication; switching to insulin therapy is safer if needed. In case of overdose, severe hypoglycemia may occur, requiring immediate emergency care, and treatment should follow a doctor's guidance. This medication has not been established for safety and efficacy in children, and elderly patients may require dosage adjustments due to reduced kidney function. Store this medication in a place out of reach of children, and keep it in its original container to maintain its quality.
Not everyone experiences these, and they can vary from person to person.
This medication may be sensitive to air and moisture, so it should be stored in a tightly sealed container. Additionally, it is best to store the medication at room temperature, not too hot or cold, specifically between 1 and 30 degrees Celsius.
