It is mainly used for respiratory tract infections such as acute and chronic bronchitis, lobar and bronchopneumonia, empyema, pulmonary abscess, tonsillitis, sinusitis, and otitis media. It is also effective for urinary tract infections like cystitis, urethritis, and pyelonephritis, and helps with pelvic infections and gonorrhea treatment. It is widely used for skin and soft tissue infections such as furunculosis, abscesses, cellulitis, wound infections, osteomyelitis, and dental infections. Adults and children over 12 years or weighing over 40 kg: Administer 250 mg/125 mg of amoxicillin/clavulanate potassium orally 3 times daily every 8 hours. In cases of severe and respiratory infections, the dose may be increased to 500 mg/125 mg. For patients with renal impairment, adjust the dosage according to creatinine clearance. - For those with creatinine clearance above 30 mL/min: No dose adjustment is necessary
For children weighing less than 40 kg with renal impairment, the dosage should be reduced in the same manner as for adults.
This medication is a beta-lactam antibiotic belonging to the penicillin class and should not be administered to certain patients. Firstly, patients who have had hypersensitivity reactions to this medication or other beta-lactam antibiotics may experience severe allergic reactions if administered this medication, so they should avoid it. Additionally, caution is necessary for patients with viral infections such as infectious mononucleosis or lymphocytic leukemia, as the risk of side effects such as rashes may increase. Patients who have previously experienced jaundice or liver dysfunction from this medication or penicillin class drugs should avoid re-use as issues may recur. Patients with impaired liver function should be administered this medication cautiously, as it may burden the liver, and those with moderate to severe renal impairment may experience increased blood concentration of the drug, necessitating dosage and interval adjustments. Patients with allergic predispositions or family history, those who have difficulty swallowing orally, elderly patients, and those in poor general condition may be at risk of bleeding due to vitamin K deficiency, therefore caution is recommended. Also, patients with gastrointestinal diseases that cause vomiting or diarrhea should be cautious about ingestion as the drug may not be adequately absorbed. This medication may cause gastrointestinal side effects including diarrhea, vomiting, abdominal pain, and rarely severe pseudomembranous colitis; if abdominal pain or diarrhea worsens, discontinue use immediately and consult a physician. Symptoms of liver dysfunction have also been reported, especially for elderly patients or those taking it for an extended period, necessitating regular liver function tests. Severe allergic reactions such as skin rashes, itching, and in severe cases, Stevens-Johnson syndrome may occur due to hypersensitivity; drug use should be discontinued immediately if abnormal symptoms arise. Hematologic side effects such as decreased blood cell counts or hemolytic anemia may rarely occur and require testing for any abnormal symptoms. Central nervous system abnormalities such as dizziness, headaches, or seizures may infrequently occur, and patients with impaired renal function are at risk of acute renal failure, requiring regular kidney function tests. This medication may interact with other drugs; if currently taking other medications, it is essential to inform healthcare providers, especially when used with anticoagulants or certain antibiotics. Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding should cautiously decide on the use of this medication after consulting with their physician, as it may affect the fetus or infant. It is not recommended for children under 12 years of age or for those weighing less than 40 kg, and elderly patients have a higher risk of adverse reactions due to decreased physiological functions, so dosage and intervals should be adjusted and monitored. It's safe to regularly monitor liver and kidney functions, blood tests, etc., while taking this medication, and report to medical personnel immediately in case of overdose. Finally, this medication should be stored in a sealed container to keep moisture out, and it is important to take it only as directed by your doctor for the specified period and dosage.
