This medication is effective in preventing the occurrence of asthma and is useful for long-term treatment. It is also utilized to relieve symptoms of seasonal and perennial allergic rhinitis.

How to take

Adult dose

This medication should be taken once daily, preferably in the evening for asthma patients. For patients with both asthma and allergic rhinitis, take 1 tablet in the evening once daily. This medication should be administered 1 hour before or 2 hours after meals.

Child dose

Children aged 2 to 5 years should chew 4 mg of Montelukast once daily.

Precautions

This medication is used for the treatment of asthma and allergic rhinitis. While taking this medication, neurological and psychiatric symptoms may appear, hence patients and caregivers should closely monitor for changes in mental state such as agitation, anxiety, depression, hallucinations, and suicidal thoughts. If these symptoms or behavioral changes occur, stop taking the medication immediately and consult with a doctor. This medication contains the artificial sweetener aspartame; therefore, patients with phenylketonuria should not take it. Do not use this medication if there is a history of allergic reactions to it. Side effects such as fatigue, headache, dyspepsia, cough, and rash may occur, with rare but serious side effects like liver dysfunction or blood disorders; hence caution is necessary. This medication is not an immediate treatment for acute asthma attacks, so be sure to have a rescue inhaler ready. This medication can be used with other asthma treatments, but do not abruptly switch from other corticosteroids to this medication. Patients with hypersensitivity to aspirin or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs should avoid using these medications while taking this drug. If pregnant or breastfeeding, discuss the necessity and risks of using this medication with a doctor. Children and elderly patients can use it, but they should adhere to the doctor's directions regarding safety and effectiveness by age group. In cases of overdose, no specific antidote is available, so general symptom management and clinical monitoring are necessary. This medication is sensitive to light, so do not open until just before use, and take it immediately after preparation. Store in a place where children cannot reach it and do not transfer to another container. This medication should be taken continuously even when asthma symptoms are absent, and consult a doctor immediately if symptoms worsen. For patients with exercise-induced asthma, it is safer to use this medication in combination with a bronchodilator rather than alone.

Mild side effects

Agitation, aggressive behavior, anxiety, depression, disorientation, attention deficits, stuttering, sleep disturbances, hallucinations, insomnia, memory impairments, obsessive-compulsive symptoms, psychomotor hyperactivity (including irritability, instability, and forwardness), sleepwalking, tics, dizziness, drowsiness, sensory disturbances/ sensory decline, palpitations, nosebleeds, diarrhea, dyspepsia, nausea, vomiting, joint pain, muscle cramps, myalgia, enuresis, asthenia, fatigue, fever, edema, hair loss, itching, headache
