This medication helps prevent the onset of asthma and continuously treat its symptoms. It is also used to relieve symptoms of seasonal and perennial allergic rhinitis.

How to take

Adult dose

This medication should be taken once daily; asthma patients should take it in the evening, and allergic rhinitis patients should determine the timing based on their condition. Patients with both asthma and allergic rhinitis should take 1 tablet once daily in the evening. This medication should be administered 1 hour before meals or 2 hours after meals.

Child dose

For children aged 6 to 14: Administer 5 mg of montelukast once daily by chewing. This medication should be given 1 hour before meals or 2 hours after meals.

Precautions

This medication is used for the treatment of asthma and allergic rhinitis. During treatment, neuropsychiatric side effects may occur, and patients or caregivers should immediately inform a doctor if new symptoms such as restlessness, anxiety, depression, hallucinations, or suicidal thoughts arise. This medication contains the artificial sweetener aspartame and should be avoided by patients with the genetic disorder phenylketonuria. Care should be taken not to exceed the WHO recommended intake of aspartame. Patients with hypersensitivity to this medication should not use it. Common side effects may include fatigue, fever, abdominal pain, dyspepsia, headache, cough, nasal congestion, and rash, while rare cases of liver dysfunction, blood abnormalities, skin rash, and myalgia have been reported. This medication should not be used as an emergency treatment for acute asthma attacks, and a rescue inhaler should always be carried. Additionally, inhaled corticosteroids should not be abruptly discontinued or switched. Patients with aspirin hypersensitivity should not take aspirin or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs while on this medication, and patients with exercise-induced asthma should not rely solely on this medication but should continue to use inhaled bronchodilators as needed. Pregnant or breastfeeding women should only take this medication after consulting with a doctor, and children and elderly people should also take it according to a doctor's instructions. In case of overdose, there is no specific antidote, so general treatment according to symptoms should be provided, and adherence to the prescribed dosage is crucial. Do not open the medication until use, store it out of reach of children, and avoid transferring it to other containers. This medication should be taken continuously even in the absence of symptoms, and if symptoms worsen or adverse reactions occur, consult a doctor.

Hives, severe swelling (edema), tightness in the chest, difficulty breathing, cold sweat, pallor, severe rash with high fever, blisters, skin peeling, oral/ocular mucosal pain, jaundice (yellowing of skin or eyes), extreme lethargy, sudden and severe headache, thunderclap headache, seizures, confusion of consciousness, vision problems, paralysis, significant decrease in urine output, severe swelling all over the body and high blood pressure, toxic epidermal necrolysis.
