Treatment of herpes zoster and treatment and suppression of herpes simplex and genital herpes
This medication is used for the treatment and recurrence prevention of infections caused by the varicella-zoster virus and genital herpes, as well as herpes simplex virus infections. It is particularly effective for herpes infections in patients with weakened immune functions. The tablets treat various herpes virus infections according to the dosage; the cream formulation is suitable for treating cold sores. This drug is used to improve skin conditions caused by viruses.
1. Treatment of herpes zoster infection Adults: Administer 250 mg of famciclovir orally 3 times daily for 7 days. It is preferable to start treatment as soon as symptoms appear after infection. 2. Treatment of initial genital herpes infection Adults: Administer 250 mg of this drug orally 3 times daily for 5 days. It is preferable to start treatment as soon as symptoms appear after infection. 3. Treatment of acute recurrent genital herpes infection Adults: Administer 125 mg of this drug orally 2 times daily for 5 days. It is preferable to start treatment during the prodromal period or as soon as symptoms appear after infection. 4. Suppression of recurrent genital herpes Adults: Administer 250 mg of this drug orally 2 times daily. Interrupt treatment periodically every 6~12 months to assess whether the natural course of the disease has changed. 5. Patients with renal impairment: Because the creatinine clearance of this drug is decreased in patients with renal impairment, dosage adjustments should be made with caution. The dosage regimen for these patients is as follows. 1) Treatment of herpes zoster and initial genital herpes infection: Creatinine clearance (mL/min/1.73㎡) 30~59: 250 mg per dose, 2 times daily 10~29: 250 mg per dose, once daily 2) Treatment of acute recurrent genital herpes infection: Creatinine clearance (mL/min/1.73㎡) 30~59: 125 mg per dose, 2 times daily 10~29: 125 mg per dose, once daily 3) Suppression of recurrent genital herpes infection: Creatinine clearance (mL/min/1.73㎡) 30~59: 250 mg per dose, 2 times daily 10~29: 125 mg per dose, 2 times daily 4) If only the serum creatinine level is known, creatinine clearance can be calculated using the following formulas. Men: {body weight (kg) × (140-age)}/ {72 × serum creatinine (mg/dL)} Women: 0.85 × the value calculated for men 5) Patients with renal impairment undergoing hemodialysis For patients on hemodialysis, it is preferable to administer this drug every 48 hours, taking the dialysis interval into account. A 4-hour hemodialysis session reduces the plasma concentration of this drug by approximately 75%; therefore, administer this drug immediately after dialysis. The recommended dose is 250mg for patients with herpes zoster and 125mg for patients with genital herpes. 6. Patients with hepatic impairment: No dose adjustment is required in patients with chronic compensated liver disease. There is insufficient treatment experience in patients with overt chronic decompensated liver disease; therefore, a clear recommended dose has not been established.
This drug should not be used in patients who have had allergic reactions to this drug, its components, or its active ingredient, penciclovir. Patients with renal function issues should exercise increased caution when using this drug and may need dosage adjustments as necessary. Symptoms such as headache or nausea may occur during treatment; however, they are generally mild and transient. Regular blood tests may be necessary, as platelet counts may drop or leukocyte and neutrophil levels may decrease. Neurological symptoms such as dizziness, drowsiness, or confusion may occur, so it's advisable to avoid driving or operating machinery if these symptoms arise. Gastrointestinal symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, and diarrhea can occur frequently. Liver function abnormalities or, rarely, jaundice may appear, so attention to liver health is required. Skin rash or itching commonly occurs, and serious skin reactions may rarely develop, thus immediate consultation with healthcare providers is necessary if unusual symptoms arise. Acute renal failure has been rarely reported in patients with deteriorating renal function, making regular monitoring of kidney status important. This drug does not cure genital herpes, so it's advised to avoid sexual contact when symptoms are present and to maintain safe sexual practices. There is no evidence that this drug directly affects driving or machinery operation; however, caution should be taken in cases of dizziness or drowsiness. Elderly patients generally do not require dosage adjustments, but dosage may need to be adjusted if renal function is impaired. In case of overdose, immediate medical attention should be sought, and blood dialysis may be beneficial. Store this drug in a dry place below 30 degrees Celsius, and keep it in a safe location out of reach of children; avoid transferring it to other containers.
Not everyone experiences these, and they can vary from person to person.
