Prevention of asthma and relief of allergic rhinitis symptoms
This medication helps to prevent and provide ongoing treatment for asthma attacks. It is also used to relieve the symptoms of seasonal and perennial allergic rhinitis.
This medication is taken once daily, preferably in the evening for asthma patients. For allergic rhinitis patients, the dosing time is determined based on the patient's condition. Patients with both asthma and allergic rhinitis should take 1 tablet in the evening once daily. Adults and adolescents over 15 years of age should take 10 mg of montelukast orally once daily.
This medication contains the artificial sweetener aspartame, which is broken down into phenylalanine in the body. Therefore, patients with the genetic disorder phenylketonuria should not take this medication. The daily intake of aspartame should be limited to below the recommended amount by WHO, which is a maximum of 2.4g for adults. Patients with hypersensitivity to this medication or those with genetic conditions such as galactose intolerance, Lapp lactase deficiency, or glucose-galactose malabsorption related to the lactose contained in this medication should not take it. This medication is not intended for the treatment of acute asthma attacks; therefore, appropriate emergency medications should always be readily available in case of acute symptoms. When reducing the dose of inhaled corticosteroids, it should be done gradually under the supervision of a physician, and sudden changes to this medication should not be made. During treatment, mental health symptoms such as anxiety, depression, and behavioral changes may occur, and patients should consult a doctor immediately if such symptoms arise. For exercise-induced bronchospasm, do not use this medication alone; continue to use inhaled β-agonists as needed and use a rescue inhaler in emergencies. Patients with hypersensitivity to aspirin should avoid taking aspirin or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs while using this medication. Rarely, serious side effects such as generalized eosinophilia and vasculitis may occur with this medication, so patients should seek medical attention if they experience eosinophilia, skin rash, or worsening pulmonary symptoms. No clinically significant interactions have been reported when taken with other medications, but monitoring by a doctor is necessary when used with certain enzyme inducers. Use during pregnancy only when necessary, and nursing mothers should exercise caution when taking it. This medication can be used in children over 6 months of age and in elderly patients without specific dose adjustment; however, elderly patients should be monitored for drug reactions. In cases of overdose, there is no specific antidote, so general symptomatic treatment should be administered, and medical professionals should be notified immediately of any adverse reactions. Store this medication out of reach of children, and since it is sensitive to light, it should be opened just before use and taken immediately. During treatment, if asthma symptoms worsen or the use of rescue inhalers increases, consult a doctor, and do not arbitrarily reduce or stop using other asthma medications.
