Efficacy & effects

Improvement of blood sugar control in type 2 diabetes

View approved original text

This medication is used to assist in blood sugar control for patients with type 2 diabetes. It is primarily given as a supplement to dietary and exercise therapy, and if blood sugar is not sufficiently controlled, it may be used in combination with other oral hypoglycemic agents or insulin. It is particularly effective to use this medication alongside sulfonylureas or metformin when control is difficult. This aids in blood sugar management to improve diabetes treatment.

How to take

Adult dose

This medication is taken orally once daily, before breakfast or just before the first meal. The initial dose is 1 mg once daily, and may be increased by 1 mg at intervals of 1 to 2 weeks as needed. Generally, it is administered up to a maximum of 4 mg, although some patients may require an increase up to 6 to 8 mg. If effectiveness is insufficient after administering 4 mg daily, a switch to insulin therapy or considering other combination therapies is needed.

Precautions

This medication must not be used in patients with type 1 diabetes, diabetic ketoacidosis, or those in a state of coma. It should also not be administered to individuals allergic to this medication or sulfonylureas, or sulfonamides. Patients with severe liver or kidney impairment should not use this medication and should switch to insulin therapy. Women who are pregnant, may become pregnant, or are breastfeeding should not take this medication. Patients with severe infections, pre- or post-surgery, or trauma may require insulin therapy. Patients with gastrointestinal disorders should be cautious as malabsorption may increase the risk of hypoglycemia. Individuals with lactose intolerance or specific genetic metabolic disorders should not take this medication. During the initial dosing phase, there is an increased risk of hypoglycemia, so blood sugar should be checked frequently, and symptoms of hypoglycemia should be observed. Particularly for the elderly, those with poor nutritional status or irregular eating habits, and patients with poor liver or kidney function, careful administration is necessary. Excessive alcohol consumption or taking other medications can also affect blood sugar control, so caution is advised. Symptoms of hypoglycemia include headache, fatigue, dizziness, confusion, drowsiness, so if these appear, immediate intake of sugar is required. In severe cases, loss of consciousness or seizures may occur, necessitating immediate medical assistance. Visual disturbances, gastrointestinal symptoms, liver function abnormalities, blood abnormalities, and allergic reactions may also occur; consult a physician if any abnormal symptoms arise. This medication should be taken regularly, and dietary plans and exercise should be combined for optimal blood sugar control. The quickest response to hypoglycemia is to consume sugar; artificial sweeteners without sugar are ineffective. When receiving treatment at other hospitals or pharmacies, it is essential to inform them of the use of this medication and the diabetic condition. In stressful situations such as surgery or infections, a temporary switch to insulin therapy may be necessary. Start with a small dose and confirm effectiveness through blood and urine tests, adjusting as necessary. This medication may affect driving or operating machinery, so caution is warranted. There may be interactions with specific medications, so inform your healthcare provider of any other medications being taken. Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding should not use this medication and should switch to insulin therapy for safety. Safety and efficacy in children under 18 years have not been established. Elderly patients may need dosage adjustments due to decreased kidney function. In case of overdose, hypoglycemia may worsen, so immediate visit to a medical institution for proper treatment is necessary. This medication should be kept out of reach of children and stored in its original container.
