This medication helps prevent the occurrence of asthma and assists in ongoing treatment. It is also used to relieve symptoms of seasonal and year-round allergic rhinitis.

How to take

Adult dose

This medication is taken once daily; asthma patients should take it in the evening. For allergic rhinitis patients, the dosing time is set based on the patient's condition. Patients with both asthma and allergic rhinitis should take one tablet in the evening, once a day. Adults and adolescents over 15 years should take 10 mg of montelukast once daily by mouth.

Precautions

This medication contains the artificial sweetener aspartame and should be avoided by patients with the hereditary disease phenylketonuria. The daily intake of aspartame should be limited to below the recommended levels set by WHO, and adults should be careful not to exceed 2.4 grams in a day. Patients with hypersensitivity to this medication or those with genetic conditions such as lactase deficiency, galactose intolerance, or glucose-galactose malabsorption should not take this medication. When taking this medication, asthma or allergic rhinitis patients may experience various side effects, including fatigue, headache, abdominal pain, cough, and rash, so caution is required. Especially in children and the elderly, similar side effects have been reported when taking this medication, so if symptoms appear, consultation with a doctor is necessary. This medication is not intended for use during an acute asthma attack; therefore, a bronchodilator should be prepared for emergency situations. Do not abruptly discontinue inhaled corticosteroids and adjust according to a doctor's instructions. While taking this medication, it is advisable to avoid taking aspirin or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs; patients with aspirin hypersensitivity should be particularly careful. If any neuropsychiatric symptoms occur during treatment, such as anxiety, depression, hallucinations, or suicidal thoughts, inform a doctor immediately. Pregnant or breastfeeding women should consult with a doctor before taking this medication and should take it only when necessary. There is no specific antidote for overdose; hence, proper treatment and monitoring according to symptoms are necessary. This medication is sensitive to light, so do not open it until just before taking it, and consume it immediately after preparation. Keep out of the reach of children and do not transfer to other containers for safety. This medication should be taken continuously even when asthma symptoms are absent, and if symptoms worsen, one must consult a doctor. In cases of exercise-induced asthma, do not rely solely on this medication for treatment and continue using an inhaled bronchodilator.
