Summary

Main use
Reduction of risk for myocardial infarction and stroke, improvement of hyperlipidemia
Who uses it
Adults · Children
Adult dosage
For hyperlipidemia, the recommended initial dose is 10 mg of atorvastatin once daily; however, for patients requiring more significant LDL-cholesterol reduction, treatment may commence with 20 mg or 40 mg once daily. The dosage range for this medication is 10 to 80 mg once daily. The initial and maintenance doses should be individualized based on treatment goals and response, with lipid levels analyzed 2 to 4 weeks post-initiation and dosage adjusted accordingly. The objective of treatment is to lower LDL-cholesterol levels, so LDL-cholesterol should be measured at the time of initiating treatment and evaluating treatment response. If LDL-cholesterol levels are unavailable, total cholesterol levels may be used for monitoring treatment response.
Children's dosage
For pediatric patients with heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia (ages 10 to 17), the recommended initial dosage is 10 mg once daily, and the maximum recommended dosage is 20 mg once daily. Dosage should be adjusted appropriately according to the therapeutic goals for individual patients.

This medication helps reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases. In particular, it lowers the risk of myocardial infarction and stroke and reduces the chances of requiring angioplasty or experiencing angina. It also decreases the risk of cardiac complications in patients with type 2 diabetes and lowers the hospitalization rate due to congestive heart failure. It is effective in treating hyperlipidemia, lowering total cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol, apolipoprotein B, and triglyceride levels, while raising HDL-cholesterol levels. It is especially beneficial for pediatric patients with a family history or high-risk factors. This medication is used to improve cardiovascular health and manage hyperlipidemia.

Dosage and Administration

For hyperlipidemia, the recommended initial dose is 10 mg of atorvastatin once daily; however, for patients requiring more significant LDL-cholesterol reduction, treatment may commence with 20 mg or 40 mg once daily. Elderly patients or those with renal impairment are at a higher risk of myopathy and rhabdomyolysis, so they should be carefully observed for any unusual symptoms during treatment. In cases of overdose, there is no specific antidote, so treatment should be symptomatic, and liver function and muscle status should be tested regularly. This medication should be stored out of reach of children and kept in its original packaging to maintain its quality.
