This medication helps in preventing and continuously treating asthma. It is also used to relieve symptoms of seasonal and perennial allergic rhinitis.

How to take

Adult dose

This medication should be taken once daily, preferably in the evening for asthma patients. For patients with both asthma and allergic rhinitis, take one tablet in the evening once daily. This medication should be administered one hour before or two hours after meals.

Child dose

Children aged 6 to 14 years should chew 5 mg of montelukast once daily.

Precautions

This medication contains the artificial sweetener aspartame and should not be used by patients with phenylketonuria, a genetic disorder that requires the restriction of phenylalanine intake. The amount of aspartame included in this medication is controlled to not exceed the recommended daily intake established by the World Health Organization. Patients allergic to this medication or its components should not take it. Additionally, this medication contains lactose, so patients with genetic issues such as galactose intolerance, lactase deficiency, or glucose-galactose malabsorption should not use it. This medication is not to be used as an emergency treatment for acute asthma attacks; appropriate emergency medications should be kept on hand and used during acute symptoms. Inhaled corticosteroid treatments should not be abruptly stopped or replaced with this medication without a doctor's guidance and should be gradually adjusted. During the use of this medication, neuropsychiatric symptoms such as anxiety, depression, hallucinations, and suicidal thoughts may occur, and if such symptoms arise, immediate consultation with a doctor is advised. This medication should not be used alone for the treatment of exercise-induced bronchospasm; inhaled beta-agonists should continue to be used as needed. Patients with hypersensitivity to aspirin should avoid taking aspirin or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs while using this medication. There can be rare severe side effects like systemic eosinophilia or vasculitis; if a rash, worsening pulmonary symptoms, or heart issues develop, immediate medical attention is required. It should be taken during pregnancy only if necessary, and caution is needed when breastfeeding. Caution should be exercised regarding its use in children, especially those under 6 months of age, as safety and efficacy have not been adequately established. In cases of overdose, specific antidotes are not available, and general symptomatic treatment and clinical monitoring are necessary. This medication is sensitive to light, so it should be taken immediately after opening and kept out of reach of children.
