Treatment of chronic hyperuricemia in patients with gout
This medication is used to treat chronic hyperuricemia in patients with gout. Specifically, it helps control uric acid levels in the blood, preventing gout attacks and alleviating symptoms. By effectively managing hyperuricemia, it reduces pain and inflammation caused by gout, improving the patient's quality of life.
1. Adults Administer 40 mg or 80 mg of this medicine once daily, with or without food. This medicine acts very rapidly; therefore, recheck the serum uric acid level after 2 weeks. The treatment goal is to lower and maintain the serum uric acid level below 6 mg/dL(357 μmol/L). 2. Patients with renal impairment No dose adjustment is required in patients with mild or moderate renal impairment. The safety and efficacy of this medicine have not been adequately evaluated in patients with severe renal impairment (creatinine clearance below 30 mL/min). 3. Patients with hepatic impairment No special dose adjustment is required in patients with mild or moderate hepatic impairment. Only limited information is available for patients with moderate hepatic impairment, and the efficacy and safety of this medicine have not been studied in patients with severe hepatic impairment (Child Pugh Class C).
This medication may increase the risk of cardiovascular mortality when administered to patients with cardiovascular disease; therefore, alternative treatments should be considered for these patients. Patients with an allergy to the active ingredient or excipients of this medication, those taking mercaptopurine or azathioprine, and those with lactose intolerance or specific genetic metabolic disorders should not take this medication. Patients with a history of liver disease or thyroid dysfunction, ischemic heart disease, congestive heart failure, and organ transplant recipients must use this medication cautiously, and especially should undergo regular liver function tests. Taking this medication may result in various side effects such as liver function abnormalities, diarrhea, headache, rash, fatigue, joint pain, dizziness, etc., so any symptoms that arise should be discussed with healthcare providers. Acute gout attacks should not result in the initiation of this medication, and during the initial administration, it is essential to consider appropriate preventive treatment as gout attacks may worsen. This medication can cause drowsiness and dizziness, so caution should be taken when driving or operating hazardous machinery. If symptoms or side effects related to cardiovascular disorders occur, healthcare providers should be notified immediately, and if signs of decreased liver function appear (e.g., weakness, loss of appetite, jaundice), the medication should be stopped immediately, and testing should be performed. This medication is not recommended for women who are pregnant or breastfeeding, and there is no experience using it in children under 18 years old, so it should not be administered to them. Additionally, this medication may interact with specific drugs, and it is crucial to inform healthcare providers if other medications are being taken. In case of overdose, no specific antidote exists, so treatment should be symptom-based, and it should be stored out of reach of children.
