Improvement of hypercholesterolemia (dyslipidemia) and reduction of the risk of atherosclerotic vascular diseases
This medication is used as an adjunct treatment to lower elevated total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, Apo B, triglycerides, and non-HDL cholesterol levels in patients with primary hypercholesterolemia and mixed dyslipidemia, while raising HDL cholesterol levels. It is especially prescribed in conjunction with a diet for patients at increased risk of atherosclerotic vascular disease due to hypercholesterolemia. The diet should include restrictions on saturated fat and cholesterol intake, and this medication is used when non-drug treatments are insufficiently effective. It is important to identify and appropriately treat any secondary causes of dyslipidemia, such as diabetes or hypothyroidism, before starting this treatment. Additionally, during pharmacotherapy, cholesterol and triglyceride levels should be regularly monitored to assess treatment effectiveness. This medication is used for the treatment of dyslipidemia.
This medication is administered once daily without regard to meals. The recommended dosage range is 10/5mg to 10/20mg daily, with an initial dose of 10/5mg recommended. For patients requiring a greater reduction in LDL cholesterol, the dose may be adjusted accordingly. After initiation of therapy or dose adjustment, lipid levels should be monitored at intervals of 4 weeks or more, and the dose may be adjusted as necessary, up to a maximum of 10/20mg per day.
This medication can cause a rare side effect called rhabdomyolysis, which can lead to serious muscle problems, so patients must immediately inform their doctor if they experience severe muscle pain or weakness. Patients at risk of worsening kidney function due to severe infections, hypotension, major surgeries or trauma, or severe metabolic disorders may need to temporarily discontinue this medication. It should not be used in patients who are allergic to any ingredient, have active liver disease or persistently elevated liver enzyme levels, have a muscle disorder, have severe kidney function impairment, are pregnant or may become pregnant, or are breastfeeding. Caution should be taken when taken with specific medications such as cyclosporine or fibrate-class drugs, as this may increase the risk of muscle injury. This medication contains lactose and should not be administered to patients with lactose intolerance or related genetic disorders. Alcoholics or those with a history of liver disease, elderly patients, and those with hypothyroidism who are at high risk of myopathy should use this medication cautiously, requiring regular blood testing and symptom observation. This medication may affect liver function, so liver function tests should be performed before and during treatment, and any symptoms of liver damage should be immediately reported to healthcare professionals. Blood glucose levels can increase, so patients at risk of diabetes should manage their blood sugar effectively. Since there might be interactions with other medications during the use of this medication, all medications being taken should be disclosed to healthcare providers, especially when combined with warfarin or certain antibiotics, antifungal, and antiviral medications. Pregnant or breastfeeding women should not take this medication, and fertile women should use appropriate contraception while on it. Safety in children or adolescents has not been sufficiently established, so it is advisable not to use it except in special cases. In case of overdose, there are no specific antidotes, and treatment should be appropriately directed based on symptoms, while monitoring liver function and muscle enzyme levels. This medication should be kept out of the reach of children, and transferring it to other containers should be avoided.
