This medication is used to prevent and continuously treat asthma. It is also effective in relieving symptoms of seasonal and perennial allergic rhinitis. Thus, it helps improve respiratory issues caused by asthma and allergic rhinitis.

How to take

Adult dose

Adults and adolescents aged 15 years and older should take 10 mg of montelukast orally once daily. This medication should be administered 1 hour before meals or 2 hours after meals.

Child dose

Children aged 6 to 14 years should chew 5 mg of montelukast once daily. Children aged 2 to 5 years should chew 4 mg of montelukast once daily. This medication should be taken 1 hour before meals.

Precautions

This medication may affect the nervous system and can cause symptoms such as restlessness, anxiety, depression, hallucinations, and suicidal thoughts, so careful monitoring for such changes is necessary during treatment. This medication contains the artificial sweetener aspartame, so patients with certain genetic disorders such as phenylketonuria should avoid taking it and limit their intake of aspartame. This medication contains lactose, so patients with lactose intolerance or related genetic disorders should not take it. Various adverse reactions such as fatigue, headache, abdominal pain, dyspepsia, cough, and rash may occur during treatment, so if abnormal symptoms persist, consult a doctor. This medication is not a fast-acting treatment for acute asthma attacks; therefore, appropriate emergency medications should always be prepared and used in emergencies. When used together with inhaled corticosteroid preparations, dosage adjustments should be made gradually under a doctor's guidance, and sudden changes should be avoided.
