Reduces the risk of cardiovascular diseases and improves hyperlipidemia
This medication is used to reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases. It is beneficial for adult patients at high risk of cardiovascular events due to coronary heart disease, diabetes, peripheral vascular disease, and stroke, and reduces the risk of death from coronary heart disease as well as the occurrence of non-fatal myocardial infarction and stroke. Additionally, it also lowers the risk of coronary and non-coronary vascular interventions. It is used in the treatment of hyperlipidemia, improving levels of total cholesterol and LDL-cholesterol, thus lowering bad lipid values and increasing HDL-cholesterol levels to regulate blood lipid status in conditions such as primary hypercholesterolemia, mixed dyslipidemia, and hypertriglyceridemia. It is also safely used as an adjunct to diet to lower blood lipid levels in pediatric patients with heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia. It is effective in improving various cardiovascular diseases and dyslipidemia.
Patients should undergo a standard cholesterol-lowering diet before and during treatment with this medication. 1. Reducing risk of cardiovascular disease - The recommended initial starting dose of simvastatin is 40 mg once daily. 2. Hyperlipidemia - A typical starting dose of 20 mg is recommended to be taken as 1 dose in the evening. - For patients with mild to moderate hypercholesterolemia, starting with 10 mg is recommended.
For pediatric patients with heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia (ages 10 to 17) - The recommended initial dose is 10 mg once daily in the evening. - The recommended dosage range is 10 to 40 mg daily, with a maximum dose of
This medication may pose a risk of muscle-related abnormalities, so caution should be exercised, especially when taking high doses or combining with other medications. If muscle pain or weakness occurs, notify a doctor immediately, and if symptoms worsen, discontinue use. Do not take if there is a history of liver disease or if liver function test results are abnormal, as this may affect liver function. Pregnant women, women who may become pregnant, and nursing mothers should not take this medication and must discontinue it immediately if pregnancy is confirmed during treatment. There is an increased risk of side effects when taken with certain medications, so inform your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking other drugs. Additional caution is needed for elderly patients or those with impaired kidney function, as well as those with hypothyroidism. This medication may raise blood sugar levels in some patients, so individuals at risk of diabetes should regularly check blood sugar levels. Regular liver function and muscle-related tests should be conducted, and consult a healthcare professional if any unusual symptoms arise. Moreover, avoid substances such as grapefruit juice that inhibit CYP3A4 enzymes, as they may increase the risk of side effects from this medication. Children and adolescents over 10 years old, particularly females who have menstruated for at least a year, are eligible for treatment; it is not recommended for other age groups.
