Treatment of primary nocturnal enuresis (ages 5 and older) and nocturia associated with nocturnal polyuria (adults)
This medication is primarily used for the treatment of primary nocturnal enuresis in children aged 5 years and older and for nocturia symptoms related to adults. Nocturnal enuresis is characterized by frequent urination at night, which aids in improving the patient's sleep. It particularly helps to reduce the discomfort caused by nocturia in growing children and adults, thereby enhancing the quality of life. This medication effectively treats nocturia symptoms.
Treatment of nocturia associated with nocturnal polyuria (adults only) : Administer desmopressin acetate 0.1mg orally at bedtime. If the effect is insufficient after one week, increase the dose to 0.2mg; if the effect remains insufficient, the dose may be increased at one-week intervals up to 0.4mg. Discontinue administration if there is no clinical effect within 4 weeks after dose determination. Initiation of treatment with this drug is not recommended in patients aged 65 years or older. In elderly patients who require treatment, closely monitor serum sodium levels and other parameters. (See 5. General Precautions under Precautions for Use.)
Primary nocturnal enuresis (aged 5 years and older): Administer desmopressin acetate 0.2mg orally at bedtime. If the effect is insufficient, the dose may be increased to 0.4mg. Whether to continue treatment should be determined after 3 months of administration, following a treatment-free period of at least 1 week.
This drug may pose a risk of serious coma due to hyponatremia and water intoxication, especially in elderly patients or those with certain diseases, so fluid intake should be restricted only to the feeling of thirst. Patients with genetic lactose intolerance or specific enzyme deficiencies, those allergic to any components of this medication, patients with severe heart failure, patients currently on diuretics, and patients with severely impaired kidney function should not take this medication. Patients with high blood pressure or cardiovascular diseases, chronic kidney disease patients, pregnant or possibly pregnant women, children, the elderly, and patients at risk for water and electrolyte imbalances should use this medication very cautiously. While taking this medication, symptoms such as headaches, nausea, weight gain, seizures, and coma may occur, so any abnormal symptoms should be promptly discussed with healthcare professionals. Fluid intake should be restricted from 1 hour before administration to 8 hours after administration, and excessive fluid intake should be avoided, such as in kidney function tests where the maximum should be limited to 0.5 liters. This medication may interact with other medications, so when taken with tricyclic antidepressants, diuretics, corticosteroids, and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, serum sodium levels and electrolyte status should be monitored periodically. Pregnant women should use this medication with caution, and it is advisable to discontinue breastfeeding if nursing during treatment. In case of overdose, symptoms may include headaches, nausea, seizures, and loss of consciousness, and if symptoms are severe, one should immediately visit a medical institution for appropriate treatment. This medication does not specifically affect driving or operating machinery, but caution is necessary if any abnormal symptoms arise.
Not everyone experiences these, and they can vary from person to person.
This medication should be stored in a tightly sealed container to prevent exposure to air or moisture, at a temperature between 1 degree and 30 degrees Celsius. Proper storage maintains the drug's effectiveness and prevents degradation.
