Treatment of psychiatric disorders (depression and obsessive-compulsive disorder), premenstrual dysphoric disorder, and bulimia nervosa
This medicine is used to treat various psychiatric and neurological symptoms such as depression, bulimia nervosa, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and premenstrual dysphoric disorder. In cases of depression, this medication may improve symptoms within approximately 5 to 6 weeks and alleviate persistent depressive feelings and various symptoms that disrupt daily life. In bulimia nervosa, it is effective in reducing binge eating and related behaviors. For patients with obsessive-compulsive disorder, it significantly reduces obsessive symptoms, helping with social life and work performance. Additionally, it is used to alleviate depression, anxiety, and physical discomfort caused by premenstrual dysphoric disorder. This medication safely and effectively improves symptoms with continuous dosing and regular assessments by a physician.
Adults 1. Depression 1) Initial treatment: The initial dose is 20mg of fluoxetine hydrochloride orally once daily in the morning. In controlled clinical trials, doses of 20–80mg per day were administered. If no improvement is observed, an increase in dose may be considered after several weeks. Doses exceeding 20mg per day should be administered twice daily (morning and noon), and the maximum dose of 80mg per day should not be exceeded. The onset of an adequate antidepressant effect may be delayed until 4 weeks or longer after starting treatment. 2) Maintenance/continuation/extended treatment: There are no definitive data on how long patients should be treated with this drug; however, psychopharmacologists recognize that acute episodes of depression require several months or more of drug therapy. It is not known whether the amount of antidepressant needed to relieve symptoms is the same as that needed to maintain or sustain remission. 2. Bulimia nervosa Administer 60mg of this drug per day. The daily dose should not exceed 80mg. Measure electrolyte concentrations before starting treatment. 3. Obsessive-compulsive disorder Administer 20–60mg of this drug per day. The daily dose should not exceed 80mg. 4. Premenstrual dysphoric disorder Administer 20mg of this drug per day. After 6 months of treatment, reassess whether continued treatment is necessary. Patients with renal and/or hepatic impairment, patients receiving multiple medications, elderly patients, and patients with comorbid illnesses: Administer a low dose or reduce the frequency of administration. Adjust the dose appropriately according to age and symptoms. Switching from or to MAO inhibitors used to treat psychiatric disorders Allow an interval of at least 14 days after discontinuing an MAO inhibitor used to treat psychiatric disorders before starting treatment with this drug. Conversely, at least 5 weeks must elapse after discontinuing this drug before starting an MAO inhibitor to treat psychiatric disorders. Other MAO inhibitors such as linezolid or methylene blue Patients receiving linezolid or intravenous methylene blue should not start treatment with this drug because of the increased risk of serotonin syndrome. For patients requiring more urgent treatment of a psychiatric condition, including hospitalization and other interventions, consider treatment. It may be necessary to urgently administer linezolid or intravenous methylene blue to a patient already receiving this drug. If no alternative to linezolid or intravenous methylene blue is available and, in a particular patient, the benefits of treatment with linezolid or intravenous methylene blue are judged to outweigh the risk of serotonin syndrome, this drug may be discontinued immediately and linezolid or intravenous methylene blue administered. Monitor the patient for symptoms of serotonin syndrome for 5 weeks after administration of linezolid or intravenous methylene blue, or until 24 hours after the last dose, whichever occurs first. Treatment with this drug may be resumed 24 hours after the last dose of linezolid or intravenous methylene blue. The risk associated with non-intravenous administration of methylene blue (oral tablets or local injection) or intravenous administration of this drug at a dose of 1mg/kg or less is unclear. Nevertheless, clinicians should be aware of the possibility of emergency symptoms of serotonin syndrome with these uses.
This medication is an antidepressant used for the treatment of psychiatric disorders such as depression. There may be an increased risk of suicidal thoughts or behaviors in children, adolescents, and young adults aged 18 to 24, so it is essential to consult with a doctor and monitor closely when using this medicine. This medication should not be administered to certain patients, including those with allergies to this drug or its ingredients, severe renal impairment, or those taking specific types of medications such as MAO inhibitors. Additionally, it contains lactose, so patients with lactose intolerance or related genetic disorders should not take this medication. Patients with a history of seizures or manic symptoms should use this medication with caution, and if seizures occur or manic symptoms worsen, the medication should be stopped immediately. Patients with heart problems or heart conditions like QT interval prolongation syndrome should undergo an ECG before taking this medication and monitor their heart condition carefully during use. Patients with impaired liver or kidney function should adjust the dosage of this medication, and diabetic patients should regularly check their blood glucose levels as this medication may affect blood sugar control. Patients at risk of increased intraocular pressure or acute glaucoma should also exercise caution when taking this medication. This medication may cause various side effects, with common side effects including headaches, nausea, insomnia, fatigue, and diarrhea. Severe side effects may include decreased sexual desire, sexual dysfunction, rashes, tendency to bleed, hyponatremia, and rarely, severe skin reactions, so patients should consult a doctor promptly if any unusual symptoms occur. Sudden discontinuation of this medication may result in withdrawal symptoms such as dizziness, anxiety, and sleep disturbances, so it is important to gradually taper off the dosage according to a physician's instructions. This medication may affect judgment or motor functions after ingestion, so caution should be exercised when driving or operating hazardous machinery. Interactions may occur when taking alcohol or other drugs during treatment, so patients should consult their doctor if they are taking or plan to take other medications. Lastly, this medication may affect growth and puberty development, so regular monitoring of growth status is necessary when prescribed to children or adolescents, and any signs of abnormality should be discussed with a specialist.
Not everyone experiences these, and they can vary from person to person.
