This medicine helps prevent and provide continuous treatment for asthma. It is also used to relieve symptoms caused by seasonal and perennial allergic rhinitis. Therefore, it can be an effective treatment option for patients with asthma and allergic rhinitis.

How to take

Adult dose

Adults and adolescents aged 15 and older should take 10 mg of montelukast orally once daily. This medication should be taken 1 hour before meals or 2 hours after meals.

Child dose

Children aged 6 to 14 years should chew 1 tablet of 5 mg montelukast once daily. Children aged 2 to 5 years should chew 1 tablet of 4 mg montelukast once daily. This medication should be taken 1

Precautions

This medicine contains the artificial sweetener aspartame, which is restricted for patients with the hereditary disease phenylketonuria. The intake of aspartame should be adjusted to below the WHO recommended amount depending on body weight; for an adult weighing 60 kg, a maximum of 2.4 g per day may be taken. Patients with hypersensitivity to this medication or its components, and those with genetic problems related to lactose digestion should not take this medication. This medicine is used for patients with asthma or allergic rhinitis. In clinical trials, side effects such as fatigue, headache, dyspepsia, cough, and rash have been reported. Particularly, similar adverse reactions may occur in pediatric and adolescent patients, so caution is needed. Additionally, during the use of this medication, serious symptoms such as eosinophilia and vasculitis may occur rarely, so physicians should closely monitor the patient's condition. This medication is not used for the treatment of acute asthma attacks, so patients should always have emergency inhalers ready, and sudden discontinuation or replacement of corticosteroid preparations should be avoided. Patients with hypersensitivity to aspirin should avoid taking aspirin or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs while on this medication, as this drug will not treat such reactions. Pregnant or nursing women should exercise caution when using this medication and should only take it under a physician's direction when necessary. In case of overdose, there is no specific antidote, hence general symptomatic treatment and clinical monitoring are necessary. This medication is sensitive to light; therefore, minimize exposure during preparation for dosing and consume it immediately when mixed with water or food. Finally, this medication should be kept out of the reach of children and it is advisable to avoid transferring it to other containers.
