This medication helps to prevent the occurrence of asthma and treat ongoing symptoms. It is also used to relieve symptoms of seasonal and perennial allergic rhinitis. It is effective for improving symptoms in patients suffering from asthma and allergic rhinitis.

How to take

Adult dose

Adults and adolescents aged 15 years and older should take 10 mg orally once a day as Montelukast. It should be administered 1 hour before meals or 2 hours after meals. For asthma patients, take 1 tablet once daily in the evening. For patients with both asthma and allergic rhinitis, take 1 tablet once daily in the evening.

Child dose

Children aged 6 to 14 years should chew and take 5 mg once a day as Montelukast. This medication should be administered 1 hour before meals or 2 hours after meals. Children aged 2 to 5 years should take 4 mg once daily as Montelukast.

Precautions

This medication contains the artificial sweetener aspartame, which requires metabolism of phenylalanine in the body. Therefore, patients with phenylketonuria, a hereditary disease, should not take this medication, and care should be taken not to exceed the daily intake recommended by the WHO for aspartame. This medication may cause allergic reactions; hence, patients who are hypersensitive to this drug or its components should not take it. Additionally, because it contains lactose, patients with genetic disorders such as galactose intolerance, lactase deficiency, or glucose-galactose malabsorption should not take it. This medication is not used as a bronchodilator for acute asthma attacks, and appropriate emergency medications should always be kept on hand. It can continue to be taken during an asthma exacerbation; however, the dosage of inhaled corticosteroids should not be suddenly reduced or changed to this medication. During treatment, neurological or psychiatric symptoms, such as agitation, anxiety, depression, or hallucinations, may occur, and if any abnormal symptoms arise, one should consult a physician. Patients with exercise-induced bronchoconstriction should not use this medication alone and should prepare a short-acting inhaled bronchodilator for emergencies. Patients allergic to aspirin should not take aspirin or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs while on this medication. Rarely, systemic eosinophilia and vasculitis symptoms may occur; if symptoms worsen, immediate medical attention should be sought. This medication is known not to increase adverse reactions when used with other asthma treatments, but one should consult a physician regarding the possibility of interactions with specific drugs. Pregnant women should take it only when clearly needed, and nursing mothers should be cautious as this medication may be secreted in breast milk. It can be used safely in children and the elderly; however, safety has not been established for children under 6 months or during pregnancy. In case of overdose, there is no specific antidote available, and general treatment should be administered according to symptoms. It should be stored out of the reach of children. Lastly, this medication should be taken consistently even when symptoms are absent, and in the case of acute exacerbation, one must consult a physician and have emergency medication ready.

Hives, angioedema, toxic epidermal necrolysis, Stevens-Johnson syndrome, thrombocytopenia, anaphylaxis, severe allergic reactions, severe skin reactions, respiratory problems, systemic eosinophilia (Churg-Strauss syndrome), suicidal thoughts and behavior, seizures, nosebleeds, pulmonary eosinophilia, cholestatic hepatitis, hepatocellular liver damage, mixed liver injury, severe edema or urination abnormalities accompanied by elevated blood pressure.
