This medication is used to treat gastroesophageal reflux disease and erosive esophagitis, and it is also effective as a long-term maintenance therapy for preventing recurrence in esophagitis patients. Moreover, it helps alleviate symptoms associated with gastroesophageal reflux in patients without esophagitis. It is included in the antibiotic combination therapy for eradicating Helicobacter pylori, contributing to the prevention of recurrence in patients with duodenal ulcers and peptic ulcers who are Helicobacter pylori positive. It is also applicable for short-term therapy in the treatment of upper gastrointestinal symptoms, pain, and discomfort associated with non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. Additionally, it helps in the treatment and prevention of gastric and duodenal ulcers in patients requiring continuous administration of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, and it is used in the treatment of Zollinger-Ellison syndrome. Finally, it is effective as a maintenance therapy following the prevention of rebleeding from gastric or duodenal ulcers. This medication is widely used to treat and prevent gastrointestinal diseases.

Precautions

This medication should not be administered to patients allergic to specific components or benzimidazole derivatives. Caution is also required when combining this medication with patients allergic to penicillin antibiotics or macrolide antibiotics. Serious interactions may occur if this medication is taken with certain drugs (e.g., terfenadine, cisapride, pimodine, astemizole, atazanavir, nelfinavir, rilpivirine) and should be avoided. It is safest for nursing women not to take this medication. Patients with a history of myocardial infarction or currently experiencing myocardial infarction should not use this medication. Diverse side effects can occur while taking this medication, and may include headache, abdominal pain, diarrhea, skin rash, muscle pain, and rarely, serious allergic reactions or liver dysfunction. Long-term use may increase the risk of electrolyte imbalances such as hypomagnesemia or fractures; therefore, regular monitoring is necessary. This medication can increase the risk of bacterial overgrowth in the gut by suppressing gastric acid secretion; consultation with a healthcare professional is needed if diarrhea persists. There are many drug interactions, especially with medications such as warfarin, methotrexate, clopidogrel, where changes in blood concentration and side effect risks may occur; physician's instructions should be followed. The safety of this medication during pregnancy has not been established, so it should be used cautiously only when necessary. In case of overdose, there are no specific antidotes, and appropriate treatment and observation are needed according to symptoms. Keep this medication out of reach of children and store it in its original container.
