This medication helps prevent asthma attacks and manage symptoms continuously. It is also used to relieve symptoms of seasonal and perennial allergic rhinitis. It is mainly effective in the management of respiratory diseases and contributes to improving the quality of life for patients.

How to take

Adult dose

Adults and adolescents aged 15 years and older should take montelukast as 10 mg once daily by mouth. This medication is administered 1 hour before meals or 2 hours after meals. Patients with asthma and allergic rhinitis should take 1 tablet, 1 packet, or 1 piece in the evening once daily.

Precautions

This medication is used to alleviate symptoms of asthma and allergic rhinitis. During the course of this medication, significant neuropsychiatric symptoms may occur, so patients and caregivers should be alert for symptoms such as restlessness, anxiety, depression, hallucinations, and suicidal thoughts. If these neuropsychiatric symptoms or behavioral changes occur, the medication should be stopped immediately and a doctor should be consulted. This medication contains the artificial sweetener aspartame, so patients with certain genetic diseases such as phenylketonuria should avoid its use. If the preparation contains lactose, patients with lactose intolerance or galactose metabolism disorders should not take this medication. Commonly experienced side effects during treatment include fatigue, headache, abdominal pain, cough, and rash, while rare reports of liver function abnormalities or blood dyscrasias have also been noted. This medication is not for use during acute asthma attacks, so it is essential to carry and use separate emergency medication for acute symptoms. Patients with hypersensitivity to aspirin or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs should avoid the use of those medications while taking this drug. During pregnancy, the medication should only be used if necessary after consulting with a doctor, and breastfeeding mothers should also take caution while using it.
