Efficacy & effects

Improvement of blood sugar control in type 2 diabetes

  • Difficulty in blood sugar control in patients with type 2 diabetes
View approved original text

This medicine helps improve blood sugar control in patients with type 2 diabetes. It can be used as a monotherapy when blood sugar control is difficult in combination with diet and exercise. If sufficient effect is not seen with monotherapy of metformin or sitagliptin, or if both medications are being used, this medicine (sitagliptin/metformin combination) can be used to substitute or add to enhance therapeutic effectiveness. Furthermore, if blood sugar control is insufficient when used in combination with sulfonylureas, thiazolidinediones, or insulin, this medication is administered to supplement blood sugar control. It is used in various therapeutic stages to improve blood sugar control.

Precautions

This medicine is used for the treatment of diabetes and contains two active ingredients: sitagliptin and metformin. First, sitagliptin can rarely cause serious allergic reactions, so if symptoms such as rash, difficulty breathing, or swelling of the face or lips occur, use should be stopped immediately. It can also cause acute pancreatitis, so if symptoms like abdominal pain, nausea, or vomiting arise, consult a doctor promptly. Metformin can cause rare but life-threatening metabolic disorders called lactic acidosis, so it should not be used in patients with poor kidney function or liver dysfunction. This medicine should not be administered to patients with reduced kidney function, severe infections, heart failure, or acute myocardial infarction, and especially should be temporarily discontinued before and after tests using iodinated contrast media. While taking this medication, there is a risk of hypoglycemia, so it is essential to maintain regular meal times and avoid sudden exercise or alcohol consumption. Additionally, vitamin B12 deficiency may occur, making it important to regularly perform blood tests to monitor the condition. It is advisable not to use this medicine in pregnant or potentially pregnant women, breastfeeding mothers, and children and adolescents under 18 years of age. Elderly patients may have reduced kidney function, so dosage adjustments and regular kidney function tests are necessary. Possible adverse effects during use include diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, headache, upper respiratory infection, and if severe joint pain or skin reactions occur, inform a doctor immediately. In case of overdose, general treatment can be applied and, if necessary, the drug can be removed through blood dialysis. Finally, this medicine may interact with other drugs, so it is important to consult healthcare professionals about all medications being taken, especially when used with drugs affecting kidney function.
