This medication helps prevent and manage asthma continuously. It is also used to relieve symptoms caused by seasonal and chronic allergic rhinitis.

How to take

Adult dose

Adults and adolescents aged 15 years and older should take 10 mg of montelukast orally once daily. This medication is taken once daily, and asthma patients should take it in the evening. The 10 mg oral dissolving film should be placed on the tongue to dissolve without water. This medication should be taken 1 hour before meals or 2 hours after meals.

Child dose

Children aged 6 to 14 years should take 5 mg of montelukast once daily by chewing or placing it on the tongue to dissolve, taking it without water. Children aged 4 to 5 years should take 4 mg of montelukast once daily by chewing.

Precautions

This medication is used to prevent and treat asthma and allergic rhinitis. It may cause abnormalities in the nervous system, so if there are symptoms like anxiety, depression, hallucinations, or suicidal thoughts, inform a doctor immediately. The artificial sweetener aspartame in this medication breaks down into phenylalanine in the body, so patients with the genetic condition phenylketonuria should avoid taking it. It contains lactose, so individuals with lactose intolerance or related genetic disorders should not take this medication. During treatment, fatigue, headache, abdominal pain, fever, digestive disorders, cough, and nasal congestion may occur, but these are usually mild, and serious changes are rare even with prolonged use. Particularly, this medication can be used by children and the elderly; however, infants younger than 6 months or patients with certain conditions should consult a physician before using it. This medication is not intended for the treatment of acute asthma attacks, so emergency inhalers should be used for acute symptoms. Patients sensitive to aspirin or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs should avoid these medications while taking this drug. Rare side effects such as eosinophilia or vasculitis could occur, so physicians should carefully monitor the patient's condition. No specific drug interactions have been reported when used with other asthma medications; however, if using drugs that induce certain liver metabolic enzymes, medical supervision is needed. During pregnancy or breastfeeding, this medication should only be used when necessary, and a physician should be consulted before usage. In case of overdose, there are no specific antidotes, thus general treatment and observation are necessary, and it should be stored safely out of reach of children.
