Efficacy & effects

Improvement of blood sugar control in type 2 diabetes

  • Difficulty in blood sugar control in patients with type 2 diabetes
View approved original text

This medicine is used in conjunction with dietary and exercise therapy to help control blood sugar levels in patients with type 2 diabetes. It is used when previous treatment with diabetes medications has not been effective, or when monotherapy is inadequate for blood sugar control. If sufficient control is not achieved with either Metformin or Sitagliptin monotherapy, this medication can be substituted. Additionally, if blood sugar is not adequately controlled with Metformin and sulfonylureas, thiazolidinediones, or insulin, this medicine (Sitagliptin/Metformin combination) can be used to improve blood sugar control. It effectively helps in managing blood sugar levels with various combination therapies tailored to the patient's condition.

Precautions

This medicine is used in the treatment of diabetes and acts with two components to control blood sugar levels. When taking this medication, severe allergic reactions may occur, so if symptoms like rash, difficulty breathing, or swelling of the face or neck arise, you should stop taking the medication immediately and seek medical attention. Additionally, serious inflammation of the pancreas, known as pancreatitis, can occur; therefore, if sudden abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, fever, or loss of appetite occurs while taking this medication, consult your doctor immediately. One component of this medication may be dangerous to patients with reduced kidney function, so it should not be used if kidney function is impaired. Patients with weakened heart function or those who have had an acute myocardial infarction, severe infections, or dehydration should also avoid this medication. Patients scheduled for imaging tests using contrast agents should discontinue this medication for a certain period before and after the test and can resume taking it only after confirming normal kidney function. It is safer for pregnant or nursing women not to take this medication. During treatment, be cautious of severe side effects like hypoglycemia or lactic acidosis, which can be triggered by irregular meals, intense exercise, or interactions with other medications. While taking this medication, regular blood tests and kidney function tests should be performed, and monitoring of vitamin B12 levels is also recommended. Excessive alcohol consumption can increase the risk of lactic acidosis, so it should be avoided. If surgery is to be performed, stop taking this medication 48 hours before the procedure and resume only after confirming recovery of kidney function post-surgery. During the course of this medication, be alert for symptoms of hypoglycemia, especially when used in conjunction with other blood sugar-lowering agents, as the risk of hypoglycemia may be increased. Severe joint pain or skin disorders may occur, so if these symptoms arise, consult your doctor. In case of overdose, seek immediate medical attention for appropriate treatment as some components can be removed through hemodialysis. Elderly patients may experience decreased kidney function, necessitating dosage adjustments and regular monitoring. This medication is known to have minimal impact on cardiovascular safety; however, if unusual symptoms occur while taking it, consult a healthcare professional.
