This medication is used to prevent and treat asthma continuously. It is also effective in relieving symptoms of seasonal and perennial allergic rhinitis. Therefore, it aids in both asthma management and improvement of allergic rhinitis symptoms.

How to take

Adult dose

Adults and adolescents aged 15 years and older should take montelukast 10 mg orally once daily. This medication should be taken 1 hour before a meal or 2 hours after a meal.

Child dose

Children aged 6 to 14 years should take montelukast 5 mg once daily, either chewed or placed on the tongue to disintegrate or dissolve for oral administration without water. Children aged 2 to 5 years should take montelukast 4 mg once daily.

Precautions

This medication contains the artificial sweetener aspartame and should not be used by patients with phenylketonuria, a genetic disorder. Aspartame is converted into phenylalanine in the body, so these patients must limit their intake of phenylalanine. The amount of aspartame in this medication is adjusted to be below the daily allowance recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO) and can be taken up to a maximum of 2.4 grams per day for adults. Patients who have hypersensitivity to this medication, lactose intolerance, lactase deficiency, or genetic issues such as glucose-galactose malabsorption should not take this medication, as it contains lactose. This medication is not intended to treat acute attacks of asthma, so patients must have other emergency medications on hand when acute symptoms appear. Additionally, during treatment with this medication, one should not abruptly stop or substitute inhaled or oral corticosteroids. Various adverse reactions such as fatigue, headache, abdominal pain, fever, cough, rash may occur during use, and if any of these symptoms persist or worsen, it's essential to consult a doctor. Patients with hypersensitivity to aspirin should avoid taking aspirin or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs while on this medication, and it is not yet clear whether this medication can treat bronchoconstriction caused by aspirin. Rarely, serious symptoms such as eosinophilia and vasculitis may occur in asthma patients taking this medication, so doctors should carefully monitor the patient's condition. No significant interaction reports have been made with other medications, but caution is advisable when taken with certain drugs that induce liver metabolism, and clinical monitoring as per physician’s instructions is recommended. Pregnant or nursing women should consult a doctor before taking this medication and should use it only when deemed necessary. Children and elderly individuals can use this medication, but they should follow medical advice due to potential differences in safety and efficacy by age group. In case of overdose, there are no specific antidotes, so general symptomatic treatment should be received while following a doctor's guidance. This medication is sensitive to light, so do not open the package until just before taking it, and take it immediately after preparation. Store it out of reach of children and do not transfer it to another container. This medication should be regularly taken even during symptom-free periods, and if asthma symptoms worsen, immediate consultation with a doctor is necessary. Furthermore, if exercise-induced asthma is present, continue using inhaled bronchodilators together with this medication.
