Treatment of schizophrenia
Schizophrenia is a disorder often accompanied by mental symptoms such as hallucinations, delusions, and thought disorders. This medication helps alleviate such symptoms in patients with schizophrenia, aiding in stabilizing their mental state. It particularly helps reduce unrealistic thoughts such as hallucinations or delusions, supporting smoother daily living. Moreover, it plays a crucial role in preventing relapse through continuous treatment. Therefore, this medication is used for improving schizophrenia symptoms and preventing relapse.
Adults: Take 4mg orally twice daily after meals and increase the dose gradually. The maintenance dose is 8∼16mg per day, divided into 2 doses after meals. Because the absorption of this medicine is easily affected by food, it must be taken after meals. Carefully monitor and adjust the dose for each patient so that it is the minimum required dose, and do not exceed the maximum daily dose of 24mg.
This drug may increase the risk of death in elderly patients with dementia, so caution is required. Particularly, it should be used carefully in patients at risk of cerebrovascular disease, and special care is needed if there is a risk of stroke. There is also a risk of venous thrombosis, so risk factors for thrombosis should be assessed and preventive measures taken before and during the use of this medication. Patients in a comatose state, those taking certain central nervous system depressants, and patients currently on specific antifungal or antiviral agents should not use this medication. Patients with hypersensitivity to this drug or genetic issues such as lactose intolerance should also avoid administration. Careful administration is required for patients with cardiovascular disease, Parkinson’s disease, epilepsy, or a risk of suicide, and attention is needed for patients with impaired liver function. Diabetic patients or those at risk of hyperglycemia should have their blood sugar levels checked regularly. Due to the lack of established safety in pregnant or nursing women and children, administration should be approached with caution. This drug can cause serious side effects such as neuroleptic malignant syndrome, tardive dyskinesia, paralytic ileus, and syndrome of inappropriate antidiuretic hormone secretion, so if any unusual symptoms occur, contact a doctor immediately. Additionally, varied side effects such as hypotension, insomnia, drowsiness, dizziness, gastrointestinal symptoms, and blood abnormalities may occur, requiring careful monitoring during administration. Caution is also necessary as drowsiness or decreased attention may occur during driving or operating machinery. This drug has significant interactions with certain medications, so if taking other drugs, consult with a doctor or pharmacist. In particular, co-administration with drugs that inhibit or induce CYP3A4 enzyme may increase the risk of side effects due to changes in blood concentration. The likelihood of adverse reactions is higher in the elderly, so administration should be done cautiously with close monitoring.
